Eurovision Song Contest 2019 Analysis

Here are all the 26 finalists, in the order they will perform tomorrow night:
Malta, Albania, Czech Republic, Germany, Russia, Denmark, San Marino, North Macedonia, Sweden, Slovenia, Cyprus, Netherlands, Greece, Israel, Norway, United Kingdom, Iceland, Estonia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, France, Italy, Serbia, Switzerland, Australia, Spain.

Now for the ‭15‬ countries which failed to reach the final, but which will still vote tomorrow night:‬‬‬‬‬
Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Georgia, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, Romania.

N.B. Any use of "Tuesday" throughout this post means Tuesday 14 May 2019. Any use of "Thursday", "yesterday evening" or "last night" means Thursday 16 May 2019. Any use of "tomorrow" means Saturday 18 May 2019.

Now let's look at some country groups:

Baltic States (Ex-USSR)
IN: Estonia. OUT: Latvia, Lithuania.

Only one member of this group, Estonia, is through this year. I'm glad Estonia qualified Tuesday evening, because Victor Crone gave an impressive performance of "Storm" that evening, and therefore Estonia was one of the countries on my "Definitely want to qualify" list that evening; I would have voted for Estonia had the UK been voting Tuesday evening. The other two countries in this group, Latvia and Lithuania, both of which were in the Second Semi-Final yesterday evening, are out. I'm glad Latvia is out, because I thought "That Night" was monotonous and boring, which is why it ended up on my "Definitely don't want to qualify" list. As for Lithuania "Run With The Lions" is a ballad I felt middle-the-road about from first seeing the preview video to watching the live performance in the Second Semi-Final yesterday evening; hence this ended up on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list yesterday evening. I wouldn't have minded seeing it in the final, but now it's been eliminated, I won't miss it tomorrow.

So, Latvia and Lithuania will both be able to give 12 jury points and 12 televoting points to Estonia tomorrow evening, but who will Estonia give it's 12 jury points and 12 televoting points to tomorrow night? Estonia won't be able to give them to Latvia, Lithuania, or even the neighbouring Nordic country Finland, as all of them have been eliminated.

Benelux
IN: Netherlands. OUT: Belgium. (Luxembourg didn't enter yet again)

Belgium failed to qualify Tuesday evening. Although I was unimpressed with the online video of "Wake Up", I thought Tuesday evening's live performance was better, and it ended up on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list that evening. I won't miss it tomorrow evening, but having said that, I'd have sooner seen Belgium in place of the much weaker (but fun and catchy) entry from San Marino. On the other hand, the Netherlands qualified last night. I'm glad the Netherlands are through; I've enjoyed the preview video of "Arcade" since it first appeared online, and although I was a bit disappointed with the live performance last night, I still voted for the Netherlands last night.

The upshot of this is, Belgium will still be able to give 12 jury points and 12 televoting points to the Netherlands tomorrow night (especially as Duncan Laurence has been strongly tipped to win for so long now), but who will the Netherlands give their high points to, now that they can't vote for Belgium?

Nordic area
IN: Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden. OUT: Finland.

The Nordic area did well this year, with four of the five Nordic countries qualifying to the final. To be honest, I'm glad Finland was eliminated on Tuesday evening. Undeniably Darude is famous for his instrumental "Sandstorm" from several years ago, but I thought "Look Away" sounded somewhat dull and unimpressive by comparison, which is why Finland ended up on my "Prefer not to qualify" list Tuesday evening. I'm delighted and over the moon that Norway are through, as I particularly liked "Spirit in the Sky" from the moment I first saw the preview video, and I liked it just as much performed live last night; it was the one song I most wanted to qualify last night, which is why I voted for it. Also, I'm glad Sweden qualified, as "Too Late For Love" was one of the better songs last night, which is why I also voted for Sweden. As for Denmark, I felt borderline about "Love Is Forever"; it's a nice ballad, and Leonora has a beautiful voice, but I can't see it doing all that well tomorrow evening. Denmark ended up on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list last night. Anyway, I'm glad Denmark qualified instead of Armenia, Ireland, Moldova, Latvia or Romania, all of which I didn't want in the final. Iceland is the only member of this group I didn't want in the final. I detested "Hatrið mun sigra" ever since it won Söngvakeppnin 2019 Final (which I watched online live from the UK), which is why it ended up on my "Prefer not to qualify" list Tuesday evening. Admittedly I don't like heavy / thrash metal anyway, but I appreciate plenty of people love that genre, and I guessed Hatari were almost certain to qualify.

Anyway, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden will now be able to exchange high jury and high televoting points between each other, and Finland will still be able to give its top jury and top televoting points to Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Greece and Cyprus
IN: Cyprus, Greece.

Well done to Greece and Cyprus in qualifying from the First Semi-Final on Tuesday evening. I'm glad both of them are through as I thought their performances were among the most impressive on Tuesday evening, which is why both ended up on my "Definitely want to qualify" list that evening; I would have voted for both of them had the UK been voting that evening.

That now means Greece and Cyprus will be able to give each other 12 jury points and 12 televoting points tomorrow evening.

Former Yugoslavia
IN: North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia. OUT: Croatia, Montenegro. (Bosnia & Herzegovina didn't enter this year).

This has been another year of mixed fortunes for the former Yugoslavia, with three of the five ex-Yugoslav countries taking part this year reaching the final. I'm overjoyed that Slovenia qualified on Tuesday evening, as I particularly liked their song from the moment it won the EMA 2019 Final (which I watched online from the UK). "Sebi" is the one song I most wanted to qualify Tuesday evening, and I would have voted for it if the UK had been voting that evening. Although Zala's voice seems soft, the song is probably meant to be sung softly. Serbia and North Macedonia ended up on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" lists Tuesday and Thursday evening respectively. I'm pleased to see both of them through to the final, but wouldn't have missed them if either or both had failed to qualify. I must admit, it's good to see North Macedonia in the final for the first time since 2012, especially as it's their first year of taking part under the name "North Macedonia". It's a pity Croatia didn't qualify last night, as I liked Croatia's "The Dream" more than North Macedonia's "Proud", which is why Croatia was one of the countries I voted for last night. I'm glad Montenegro are out, because I thought "Heaven" was one of the dullest entries on Tuesday evening.

The upshot of this is, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia will be able to exchange high jury points and high televoting points among each other tomorrow night, and Croatia and Montenegro will be able to award their top jury and top televoting points to North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia.

Founding Seven
By this I mean the seven countries which appeared in the very first Eurovision Song Contest in Lugano in 1956:

IN: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland. OUT: Belgium. (Luxembourg didn't enter yet again)

As I said earlier, I didn't mind Belgium failing to qualify on Tuesday evening. I'm glad the Netherlands and Switzerland qualified yesterday evening, as both were on my "Definitely want to qualify" list, and thus I voted for both of them, yesterday evening. Of course, France, Germany and Italy qualified automatically for the final as Big Five members.

And Finally
Tomorrow evening's Grand Final certainly looks set to be a spectacular one, and I'm really looking forward to it. Most of the countries I wanted to qualify are in. There were just a few countries on my "Prefer not to qualify" list (Czech Republic, Iceland, San Marino), which went through against my wishes Tuesday evening. I would have preferred Poland, Hungary and Belgium in place of Czech Republic, Iceland and San Marino. I'm not surprised Czech Republic and Iceland qualified, as both were among the most expected qualifiers. The biggest surprise was San Marino; although their entry is fun and catchy, I thought it was one of the weakest contenders of the First Semi-Final. At the end of the day, different people have different musical tastes to me and I cannot expect to have all my desired countries qualify.

Eurovision Song Contest 2019 Second Semi-Final

Host country: Israel (Kan)
Venue: Expo Tel Aviv (International Convention Center), Tel Aviv, Israel
Hosts: Bar Refaeli, Erez Tal
Green Room: Assi Azar, Lucy Ayoub
Date: Thursday 16 May 2019

N.B. Any use of "tonight" or "this evening" throughout this post means Thursday 16 May 2019. All times in this post are in BST.

The Opening
After the opening sequence, the show began with clips of the first semi-final two days ago, including Green Room shots of the ten artists who qualified Tuesday evening.

The Songs
Five minutes after the start of the show (20:05 BST) it was time for the first song. Each song was introduced by a postcard film related to the appropriate country.

Song 1: Armenia - Srbuk "Walking Out"
#ARM It's difficult epressing an opinion on the first entry in the line-up as thre have been no previous ones to compare it again. I've not been all that keen on the preview video of this song, but as far as tonight's live performance goes, I'm even less keen. There was a lot of red lighting for much of the song, the significance of which I'm mystified about. By far the best element was the collection of flames around the stage near the end; that's the only bit I liked. That said, I question the significance of the flames. I'd rather not see this on Saturday night.

Song 2: Ireland - Sarah McTernan "22"
#IRL Another song which failed to impress me when I first saw the preview video. Tonight's live performance isn't much better. The chorus is quite catchy, but overall, I think it's a weak song. I like the counter and stools, which was spun at one point, and the stage and background graphics, e.g. the floor tile effect on the stage, but that's about it really. This is another song I'd rather not see in the final.

Song 3: Moldova - Anna Odobescu "Stay"
#MDA Yet another song that I've not been particularly keen on whilst watching the preview videos, and tonight's live performance still fails to impress me. The only good think is the sand artist, whose ever-changing pictures on the table are being displayed on the background screen. The song itself its rather dull really. I'd rather not see this in the final.

Song 4: Switzerland - Luca Hänni "She Got Me"
#CHE Hurray! The first song in tonight's line-up that I actually liked from the moment I first saw the preview video, and when listening to the ESC 2019 CD album. I love it just as much sung live tonight. It has a very cachy chours, and it's appropriately accompanied by well-choreographed dances at various points. As for the staging, it makes good use of red light, and patterns. Mind you, is there any reason why red, rather than any other colour, is the dominant colour here? I definitely want this in the final. See you Saturday Luca!

Song 5: Latvia - Carousel "That Night"
#LVA Back to a song which, in all truth and honesty, one of my least liked 2019 entries among the preview videos, and on the ESC 2019 CD album. It's no better sung live tonight. The song is monotonous and downright boring. I definitely don't want this in the final.

Song 6: Romania - Ester Peony "On a Sunday"
#ROU Another song that disappointed me when I saw the preview video and heard it on the CD. The live performance tonight is no better. I question a) the need for the two men dancing around, waving their arms and bending and b) the flames near the end (and earlier in the song). I don't think either were necessary in a ballad of this style. The only bit I really liked was the bloom of pink flowers on the background screen at the end. This is another song I definitely don't want in the final.

A short break followed at this point.

Song 7: Denmark - Leonora "Love Is Forever"
#DNK When I watched Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2019 online from the UK, on Saturday 23 February 2019, I was disappointed at Leonora's "Love Is Forever" winning, because I thought there were better songs that night which could have been chosen to represent Denmark. Although Leonora has a beautiful voice, and "Love is forever" is a nice ballad, I think the style of song sounds worryingly similar to Switzerland's "In Love for a While" which finished last with just 19 points in ESC 2011 Grand Final. Anyway, back to tonight, Leonora gave a good live performance tonight. Just like the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix performance, the giant chair is on stage tonight. The background sky scene, with clouds, is appropriate for the song. Definitely one of the better songs so far tonight (due to so many bad ones), but for now I'll say this is a song I wouldn't' mind seeing on Saturday.

Song 8: Sweden - John Lundvik "Too Late For Love"
#SWE Another foreign national final I watched online from the UK was Melodifestivalen Final 2019 on Saturday 9 March 2019. I was surprised John Lundvik's "Too Late For Love" won, because I thought there were other, better, songs more worthy of representing Sweden in Tel Aviv this week. Since then, the song has grown on me when watching the preview video and hearing it on the ESC 2019 CD album. The first verse is a bit dull, but pre-chorus it built up to a lively chorus. Thereafter it gets a tad bland again. Based on solely on tonight's live performance, I'd like to see this in the Grand Final, because John sang well tonight, and I liked light column which was on and off through the song.

Song 9: Austria - PÆNDA "Limits"
#AUT Austria have had some good songs in recent years, including "Rise Like A Phoenix" in 2014 and "Loin d'Ici" in 2016. This year Austria has gone for a ballad which is a bit dull really. The best bit is the starry effect on stage, and the light beams near the end. I wouldn't mind this in the Grand Final, but I'm not overly desperate to see it there.

Song 10: Croatia - Roko "The Dream"
#HRV One of tonight's songs that I particularly liked among the preview videos and on the ESC 2019 CD album. It's a pity the singer sounded a bit off key at the times singing live tonight though. Despite that, the stageing throughout is excellent, and I like the way it was sung in a mixture of English and Croatian. I'd still like to see this in the final.

Song 11: Malta - Michela "Chameleon"
#MLT Well blow me down! This was among my least liked songs among the preview videos and on the ESC 2019 CD album. I like it an order of magnitude more sung live tonight. It was well performed, with excellent staging, including the change-colour lighting. Based solely on tonight's live performance, I'm now swayed towards wanting this in the final.

Song 12: Lithuania - Jurij Veklenko "Run With The Lions"
#LTU A ballad I felt middle-the-road about when watching the preview videos and listening to the CD is Lithuania. As far as tonight's live performance is concerned, Jurij gave a good performance and the lighting effects are appropriate for this style of song. It's a mix of gentle verses and fairly catchy choruses. I wouldn't mind seeing this in the final, but wouldn't miss it if it's not there.

A short break followed at this point.

Song 13: Russia - Sergey Lazarev "Scream"
#RUS Sergey last represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2016 with "You Are the Only One". He's back this year, with a gentler ballad. When I first saw the preview video, I thought it was dull compared to his 2016 entry, but the song has grown on me with repeat viewings of the video and listening to it on the ESC 2019 CD album. Altogether, an excellent power ballad, very well sung live tonight. I like the mirror effects, on-stage graphics and the forks of lightning. I definitely want Russia in the final. See you Saturday Sergey.

Song 14: Albania - Jonida Maliqi "Ktheju tokës"
#ALB When I first saw the preview video for this song, I quite liked it. I've continued liking it with subsequent viewings of the video and hearing it on the ESC 2019 CD album. I like tonight's live performance as well, it's an authentic Balkan ballad, sung in Albanian. Jonida gave a good live performance; her outfit and the staging were just right of this song. I liked the flame effects towards the end. Based on tonight's performance, I'm swayed towards wanting this in the final.

Song 15: Norway - KEiiNO "Spirit in the Sky"
#NOR I particularly liked this from the moment I first saw the preview video, and it's remained one of my favourites on subsequent viewings of the online videos and listening to the ESC 2019 CD album. I love the way it's got bits of joik in it, and the background images. I definitely want to see this on Saturday and I will be deeply upset if it fails to qualify.

Song 16: The Netherlands - Duncan Laurence "Arcade"
#NLD For the last two months this song has been strongly tipped to win outright! I've certainly enjoyed the preview video, and the hearing this on the CD album. By contrast, I'm a bit disappointed with the live performance tonight; I think it could be stronger, but I like the staging, including the blue lighting and background images on the screen towards the end. I'd still like to see this in the final, as it's better than some of the songs early on tonight.

Song 17: North Macedonia - Tamara Todevska "Proud"
#MKD Since their first official entry in 1998 (though they tried entering the audio qualifier in 1996 and failed to qualify) this country has been referred to as F.Y.R. Macedonia until 2018. This is the country's first year of being referred to as North Macedonia for the first time ever. Anyway, I quite liked this ballad in the preview video and on the ESC 2019 CD album, but I'm not so impressed with tonight's live performance. I wouldn't mind this in the final, but I wouldn't miss if it's not there.

Song 18: Azerbaijan - Chingiz "Truth"
#AZE The final song of the night already, it's surprising how time flies! "Truth" is a song I felt wasn't bad when I saw the preview video and heard it on the CD. Sung live tonight, it's not bad, but it's not one of the best tonight. What was the significance of the big face on the screen part way through? I wouldn't mind seeing this in the final, but wouldn't miss this if it's not there.

Televoting and Recap
After the songs finished, (names) reappeared to announce the start of the voting at 21:26 BST. A recap of the songs followed. The UK voted in tonight's semi-final, and therefore UK viewers saw the voting numbers at the bottom of the screen during the recap.

My Preferences
Here are my preferences based solely on all of tonight's performances:
Definitely want to qualify: Switzerland, Sweden, Croatia, Malta, Russia, Albania, Norway, The Netherlands.
Wouldn't mind qualifying: Denmark, Austria, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Azerbaijan.
Prefer not to qualify: Armenia, Ireland, Moldova.
Definitely don't want to qualify: Latvia, Romania.

So these are the ones I want to see Saturday night: Switzerland, Sweden, Croatia, Malta, Russia, Albania, Norway, The Netherlands; plus two (and no more!) of Denmark, Austria, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Azerbaijan.

The UK voted this evening; I voted for: Switzerland, Sweden, Croatia, Malta, Russia, Albania, Norway, The Netherlands

Eurovision Song Contest 2019 Second Semi-Final Results

Here are the results, which were announced in a random order at 22:04 BST. Any use of "tonight" still means Thursday 16 May 2019.

My desired qualifiers: Switzerland, Sweden, Croatia, Malta, Russia, Albania, Norway, The Netherlands; plus two (and no more!) of Denmark, Austria, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Azerbaijan.

Actual qualifiers (in order of announcement): North Macedonia, The Netherlands, Albania, Sweden, Russia, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Malta,

Bold entries represent the actual qualifiers that match my "Definitely want to qualify" preferences, and italic entries represent the ones that match my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" preferences.

OUT: Armenia, Austria, Croatia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania.

I'm delighted and over the moon that Norway are through, as I'd say their song is the one I most wanted to qualify. I'm also glad that Switzerland, Sweden, Malta, Russia, Albania, and The Netherlands are all through. Although Malta ended up just 15th out of 18 when I ranked the preview videos of tonight's contenders on My Eurovision Scoreboard this afternoon, I actually liked Malta's live performance enough this evening to include it on my "Definitely want to qualify" list, and hence voted for it.

The only song on my "Definitely want to qualify" list that failed to go through is Croatia, which is a pity, because I liked their song more than North Macedonia's song. That said, Roko's voice was a bit off-key tonight, so I'm not surprised Croatia failed to qualify, and I'm not disappointed. At least North Macedonia, which was on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list, qualified instead. For North Macedonia, it's their first appearance in the Grand Final since 2012 as they went through six consecutive years of not qualifying from 2013 to 2018 inclusive.

For once, all of the qualifiers are ones which were ones on my "Definitely want to qualify" and "Wouldn't mind qualifying" lists. None of the qualifiers were on either my "Prefer not to qualify", or worse still, my "Definitely don't want to qualify" lists. Great! I think that's the first ever time this has happened; in the past there have usually been some "Prefer not to qualify" and/or "Definitely don't want to qualify" songs qualify for the final against my wishes. Whilst I don't want to be hurtful to the artists from Armenia, Ireland, Moldova, Latvia and Romania, I'm glad all those countries were eliminated tonight as, in my opinion, their songs just weren't good enough for this year's Grand Final.

No matter how I personally feel about which countries' songs went thorough and which ones didn't, all the artists who performed tonight deserve equal respect. Congratulations to the ten countries which qualified to the final, and commiserations to the eight which failed to reach the final. So that means all 26 finalists are now confirmed and 15 countries have been eliminated (but will still vote in the final). Roll on the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 Grand Final at 20:00 BST Saturday evening.

Eurovision Song Contest 2019 First Semi-Final

Host country: Israel (Kan)
Venue: Expo Tel Aviv (International Convention Center), Tel Aviv, Israel
Hosts: Bar Refaeli, Erez Tal
Green Room: Assi Azar, Lucy Ayoub
Date: Tuesday 14 May 2019

N.B. Any use of "tonight" or "this evening" throughout this post means Tuesday 14 May 2019. All times in this post are in BST.

The Opening
After the initial opening sequence, the first semi-final began with last year's winner, Netta performing her winning entry from last year, "TOY". This time she was accompanied by a large number of dancers on stage. At 20:08 the four hosts entered the stage, and gave their opening speech.

The Songs
Eleven minutes after the start of the show (20:11 BST) it was time for the first song. Each song was introduced by a postcard film related to the appropriate country.

Song 1: Cyprus - Tamta "Replay"
#CYP It's difficult assessing the first song in either semi-final. Tamta gave an impressive performance of "Replay", accompanied by four dancers, plus flashing lights and flame effects. A likeable song to start with, but I don't think "Replay" is as good as "Fuego" last year. Anyway, I think this deserves a place in the final.

Song 2: Montenegro - D mol "Heaven"
#MNE Montenegro has some impressive entries over the years, including 2014, 2015 and 2018. This year I was unimpressed by their 2019 offering from the moment I first saw the preview video online. This song is performed by six singers, taking turns to sing individually, and sometimes together. A nice idea, but the song is somewhat dull and boring really. I'd rather this didn't qualify for the final.

Song 3: Finland - Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman "Look Away"
#FIN Darude is famous for his instrumental "Sandstorm" from several years ago, which I first experienced during circuit training at Bath Sports Centre, and since then during the after-show disco during the Saturday evening of the RCCGB Blackpool Bash. I'm a bit disappointed with Darude's attempt at representing Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest this year with "Look Away". It's somewhat dull and unimpressive, not much better than Montenegro. I'd rather this doesn't qualify.

Song 4: Poland - Tulia "Fire of Love (Pali się)"
#POL Four singers in impressive red outfits. Whenever I saw the preview video, and I saw the preview video, and listened to this song on the ESC 2019 CD album, I didn't dislike it, but I wasn't overly keen on it. I like this considerably more sung live tonight; I think this is one of the better songs, and would like to see it in the final.

Song 5: Slovenia - Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl "Sebi"
#SVN When I watched the Slovenian national final live online from the UK, I liked "Sebi", but was concerned it would be too quiet for Eurovision, and was surprised it made it to the Super Final, let alone qualified. Since it qualified, the song has grown on me, and I've loved both the online video and CD album recording. This evening I enjoyed the live performance just as much. I like the way the lady sings towards the man. Her voice may be soft, but perhaps the song is meant to be sung softly. The background graphics add to the magic of the song. I would definitely like this in the final.

Song 6: Czech Republic - Lake Malawi "Friend of a Friend"
#CZE From the moment I first saw the online video, I was unimpressed with "Friend of a Friend". The song is dull to begin with, before getting lively and repetitive. As for tonight's live performance, I question the need for the singer to dance around whilst singing. The staging is quite over the top too, what with the changing colour lights. Unsurprisingly this had the word "Friend" on the background screen in multiple languages during the song. I'd rather this stays out of the final.

A short break followed at this point.

Song 7: Hungary - Joci Pápai "Az én apám"
#HUN Joci Pápai previously represented Hungary with "Origo" two years ago. He's back this year, this time with "Az én apám". From the moment this won A Dal Final 2019 (which I didn't attempt to watch from the UK), I thought it was better than "Origo". I liked Joci's performance tonight, accompanied by the impressive graphics and firework effects. I'm mystified as to the significance of the faces on the back screen though. I wouldn't mind seeing this on Saturday evening, but wouldn't miss it if it's not there.

Song 8: Belarus - ZENA "Like It"
#BLR I watched the Belarussian national final live online from the UK, and thus saw this win and qualify. I didn't dislike this song when watching the preview video and hearing my ESC 2019 CD album, but it's definitely not one of the best songs out of this year's 41 contenders. Tonight's live performance was impressive I liked the on-stage dancers whilst she sung the chorus, and the lighting effects. The dance routine would be fun to join in and copy. Overall it's a catchy and fun song, but I'm not sure it deserves a place in the final. I wouldn't mind this qualifying, but wouldn't miss this on Saturday if it's not there.

Song 9: Serbia - Nevena Božović "Kruna"
#SRB Serbia has gone for a ballad this year. I quite liked it whilst watching the preview video, and listening to the ESC 2019 CD. In contrast, I'm a tad disappointed the live performance tonight. The on-stage graphics were impressive, but I'm not convinced the song is as good as I previously thought it was. I wouldn't mind this in the final, but am not overly desperate to see it there.

Song 10: Belgium - Eliot "Wake Up"
#BEL When the preview video appeared online, I was unimpressed with "Wake Up", but I think tonight's live performance is better. It's a good ballad, well sung, and I like the way he raises his arms. His two assistants add impact. I wouldn't mind this in the final.

Song 11: Georgia - Oto Nemsadze "Keep on Going"
#GEO From the moment I first saw the preview video of "Keep on Going", this was among my least liked first semi-final contenders. Quite honestly, it's an obscure and somewhat depressing song. Tonight's live performance isn't bad, but the background graphics are an order of magnitude better than the song. I hope this stays out of the final.

Song 12: Australia - Kate Miller-Heidke "Zero Gravity"
#AUS Say what you like about Australia now being allowed to perform in the Eurovision Song Contest at all, but like it or not, Australia are back this year. I didn't like this very much when it was first picked, but based on tonight's live performance, it's one of the best entries tonight. I love the impressive staging, which portrays a galaxy of stars, and the way the performers are on the bendy stilts. I'd definitely like this song in the final.

A short break followed at this point.

Song 13: Iceland - Hatari "Hatrið mun sigra"
#ISL When I watched Söngvakeppnin 2019 Final online live from the UK, on 2 March 2019, I hated this song most of all, and didn't want it to qualify. Against my wishes, it did, and is now Iceland's 2019 entry. The choruses are thrash metal, which is not my cup of tea. Despite my dislike for this song, I think the haunted style music in the verses goes well with the thrash metal choruses; a marriage made in heaven. The staging is impressive, including the flame effects. I'd rather this didn't qualify, but mark my words, it will. See you Saturday Iceland!

Song 14: Estonia - Victor Crone "Storm"
#EST Now for a much nicer song from Estonia. This reminds me of Sweden's "Popular" in 2011, but I don't think it's a weaker song. The staging was impressive, especially the forks of lightning towards the end. I'd like to see this in the final.

Song 15: Portugal - Conan Osiris "Telemóveis"
#POR Portugal have certainly gone for an unusual song this year; to me it sounds more like a Far Eastern song than a Portuguese song. When I saw the preview video, and heard this on the ESC 2019 album, I felt it's not bad, but I'm unimpressed by the live performance. In all truth and honesty, I'd rather this stays out of the final.

Song 16: Greece - Katerine Duska "Better Love"
#GRC For some time this has been tipped to win the First Semi-Final! Sadly those who have placed a bet on that will have to wait until after the Grand Final is over to know. As far as I'm concerned, when I first saw the preview video of "Better Love", I felt it's not bad, but I wasn't overly keen on it. It's certainly one of the better songs among tonight's live performances, I love the staging. I'd like to see this in the final.

Song 17: San Marino - Serhat "Say Na Na Na"
#SMR The final song already, it's shocking how time flies! Serhat, who has represented this microstate before, is back this year to sing "Say Na Na Na". After a dull start, the chorus is fun and catchy, and easy for anyone to sing along to. Altogether a fun song to round off tonight's semi-final, but it's probably best if it doesn't qualify, as there are plenty of superior songs more deserving of a place than this.

Televoting and Recap
After the songs finished, three of the hosts reappeared to announce the start of the voting at 21:25 BST. A recap of the songs followed. The UK was unable to vote in tonight's semi-final, and therefore UK viewers saw a message "UK viewers cannot vote tonight" at the bottom of the screen during the recap.

My Preferences
Here are my preferences based solely on all of tonight's performances:
Definitely want to qualify: Cyprus, Poland, Slovenia, Australia, Estonia, Greece.
Wouldn't mind qualifying: Hungary, Belarus, Serbia, Belgium.
Prefer not to qualify: Montenegro Finland, Czech Republic, Iceland, Portugal, San Marino
Definitely don't want to qualify: Georgia.

So these are the ones I want to see Saturday night: Cyprus, Poland, Slovenia, Australia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Belarus, Serbia, Belgium.

Had the UK been voting in this semi-final, I would have voted for: Cyprus, Poland, Slovenia, Australia, Estonia, Greece.

Eurovision Song Contest 2019 First Semi-Final Results

Here are the results, which were announced in a random order at 22:04 BST. Any use of "tonight" still means Tuesday 14 May 2019.

My desired qualifiers: Cyprus, Poland, Slovenia, Australia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Belarus, Serbia, Belgium.

Actual qualifiers (in order of announcement): Greece, Belarus, Serbia, Cyprus, Estonia, Czech Republic, Australia, Iceland, San Marino Slovenia,

Bold entries represent the actual qualifiers that match my preferences.

OUT: Belgium, Finland, Georgia, Hungary, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal.

I'm overjoyed that Slovenia qualified, as I particularly liked their song. Although the lady's voice may seem soft, the song is probably meant to be sung softly. I liked it from the moment it won the Slovenian national final EMA 2019. When the first nine qualifiers had been called, I was desperately hoping the tenth qualifier would be Slovenia, and thankfully it was. That means I'll be able to vote for Slovenia in the final.

I'm also glad that Australia is thorough. Though I didn't think much of the "Zero Gravity" when it was chosen to represent Australia, I thought it was one of the best live performances tonight. The staging was out of this world, and it could do well on Saturday night. Also, I'm glad Cyprus, Estonia and Greece are all through, as they gave impressive performances tonight, and thus were among the six countries on my "Definitely want to qualify" list.

I'm disappointed that Iceland qualified, as I dislike their style of song, and would have preferred it not to qualify. Nonetheless, I understand that there are plenty of thrash metal lovers around the world, and that Iceland would almost certainly qualify. Even I would have been shocked if Iceland hadn't qualified!

One surprise qualifier was San Marino. I thought that, although it's a fun, catchy, novelty song, it was a bit weak really and that Hungary or Belgium would have been more deserving of their place, but it's not the end of the world. It's nice to have a fun entry in the Grand Final, and let's face it, this will be only San Marino's second appearance in the final.

Thank goodness Georgia failed to qualify, because I thought their entry was quite depressing this year. Too many other countries songs were more deserving of a place in the final than Georgia.

So out of the six countries on my "Definitely want to qualify" list, only Poland failed to qualify; the other five of them qualified (Cyprus, Slovenia, Australia, Estonia, Greece). As for my "Wouldn't mind qualifying", Belarus and Serbia, whereas Hungary and Belgium failed to qualify. Two out of four through on that list, which is fair. Putting those two lists together, that means seven of my desired ten countries reached the final, which is quite good really. I can't expect to have all the countries I want in the final.

Anyway, no matter how I personally feel about which countries' songs went thorough and which ones didn't, all the artists who performed tonight deserve equal respect. Congratulations to the ten countries which qualified to the final, and commiserations to the seven which failed to reach the final. So that means sixteen finalists are now confirmed and seven countries have been eliminated. Another eighteen countries will battle it out for the ten remaining places on Thursday evening.

Introduction
The Club's annual UK mega-trip to start the new coaster season. Once again, the Blackpool Bash was a great success, with three entertainers performing Friday evening, a day of riding Saturday daytime (including the morning ERS), a cartoons and kids' TV themed fancy dress party with songs, games, the Gong Show and a disco Saturday evening, and another ERS Sunday morning. There was a great turnout too, with over 300 members from all over the UK (my list above is just a handful of them). I was determined as ever to attend the Blackpool Bash, and to take part in the Gong Show Saturday evening.

Thursday 25 April 2019

Getting to Blackpool
I travelled to Blackpool by train on Thursday 25 April. My journey from Bath Spa to Blackpool North began on the 10:57 train from Bath Spa to Bristol Temple Meads, followed by the 11:21 train to Newport (Gwent). Whilst there, I bought myself a ham and cheese mustard toastie, plus an Americano, before continuing my journey on the 12:19 train to Manchester Piccadilly. Once there, I had just enough time to buy myself a takeaway raspberry and almond bake, plus an Americano, from Costa Coffee, before completing my journey on the 15:31 train to Blackpool North. Having arrived at Blackpool North at 16:51, I had a taxi to my pre-booked hotel, where I checked in for four nights. It was the same hotel, close to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which I stayed at 2008 to 2018 inclusive.

Thursday Evening
Just before 19:00 I went to The Velvet Coaster (Wetherspoon), for my evening meal. I ordered a Curry Club meal: large Beef Madras for main course and a pint of Heineken to drink. In addition, I ordered British Bramley apple crumble, with ice cream, for dessert. Altogether a delicious and filling two-course meal, and thankfully the wait wasn't all that long this time. Having finished eating, I saw Andy and Mary Knight, so they sat at my table and we spoke together for a while. We finally left The Velvet Coaster around 21:00. Back in my hotel room, I relaxed the rest of the evening.

Day One - Friday 26 April 2019

Daytime
Travelling Thursday daytime gained me a day in Blackpool. For me, Friday began with a delicious breakfast: cereal, orange juice, a full English, toast and coffee. I spent the day at Sandcastle Water Park, and was in the pool / slides area from just before 11:00 until closing time of 16:30. A separate report about my day there is available here. After leaving Sandcastle Water Park, I returned to my hotel room around 17:00 to have a cup of coffee and get changed for the evening.

Early Evening
Around 18:45 I went to Pablo's Fish and Chips for a Pablo's Special (fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter, plus a standard Coca-Cola), followed by a strawberry sundae. Having finished my meal, I went straight to the Paradise Room.

Friday Fun
The Blackpool Bash officially began when the Paradise Room doors opened around 19:30. I entered the Paradise Room via the spiral stairs around 19:45, found myself a seat and bought myself half a Heineken. The fun began when Andy Hine appeared around 20:10 and said his annual catchphrase "Everybody say Blackpool", followed by his welcome speech. Graham Shaw joined him to show some new RCCGB merchandise.

The first official act was magician Martin Scott-Price. His best act was when he called a female adult member on stage, and placed her in a pillory. He ran a saw along the top, pretending to be cutting her head off. When he reopened the pillory after the saw action, the lady was still unharmed.

Next, Club member Wendy Adams Evans, sang some songs, including "Three Little Birds" (Bob Marley), "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (Kylie Minogue) and "Bring Me Sunshine" (Morecambe and Wise). Her final song was "Thank you for the music" (ABBA). When she finished singing, the interval began, during which I bought myself half a pint of Fosters.

The final act was comedian Mick Miller, who started around 22:00. He entertained members with about 40 minutes of jokes on numerous matters. These included health warnings on cigarette packets, and holidaying in Europe after Brexit. A light-hearted assortment of humour to round off the evening. When he finished around 22:40, there was still time to finish our drinks, but we had to be out by 23:00. I spoke to, and had my picture taken with some other members before heading back to my hotel for the night.

On the whole, an excellent selection of entertainment to start the RCCGB Blackpool Bash 2019. Many members liked my self-designed black "RCCGB Fun Night" T-shirt (with fluorescent pink lettering), my fluorescent pink sports shorts and my fluorescent pink football socks.

Day Two - Saturday 27 April 2019 (daytime)

First Thing
I awoke at 06:30, put on my self-designed "Coaster Crazy Kidult on Tour!" T-shirt and my Team Bath hoody, and had an early breakfast at 08:00, so that I could be at the Paradise Room soon after 08:30. For breakfast, I had cereal, orange juice, beans on toast and a mug of coffee. After breakfast, I took everything I needed for the evening to the Paradise Room, and placed it back stage. Shortly afterwards I queued to be issued with my ride wristband. Whilst in the Paradise Room, I spoke to a few other members. Around 09:10 the Club entered the Pleasure Beach through the gate. It was dry outside, and the sun happened to be out, but it was very windy.

Morning ERS
The day began with a one-hour ERS on Blue Flyer and, for the first time ever, ICON. Members walked through the Pleasure Beach and queued outside the entrance to ICON. Whilst waiting for the signal to proceed beyond the entrance into the coaster's own queue line, someone brought Nev, in his wheelchair, to the ride entry / exit point. Although he was unable to ride anything, he was at least able to see, and speak to, members entering and leaving ICON. I enjoyed three goes on ICON; my first go during this ERS was also my first ever time of riding this coaster. Altogether a really thrilling coaster, which gives a fast and very smooth ride; a much-needed new addition to the Pleasure Beach.

Summary of my rides during the Saturday morning ERS: ICON 3. Did anyone beat me on that?

Morning Free Time
After the morning ERS ended at 10:30, members spread themselves around the Pleasure Beach and took over the rides. I began with Steeplechase. Only the green and yellow tracks were open; the red lane was closed. The best thing about this coaster is its racing element, hoping to be first home. I rode the green and yellow tracks once each. Just before my first go, I noticed Steeplechase was due to close at 17:00. The operator said closing time for the whole Pleasure Beach had been brought forward from 18:00 to 17:00, due to the weather. Next, I had one go on Revolution; whilst on the landing, just before getting on, the full force of the strong wind could be felt. Having left Revolution, I went into Nickelodeon Land, where I rode Diego's Rainforest Rescue once, Blue Flyer twice and Nickelodeon Streak once. After that I had one go Big Dipper; I had to wait a few runs to get on, but I didn't mind. On this occasion, it felt very rough, presumably due to the strong wind. My final ride before lunch was one go on River Caves; my boat sailed through a series of chambers. Unfortunately, I was unable to see the scenes properly as I forgot to put my glasses back on before getting on River Caves. Having disembarked, I went to the Paradise Room for lunch.

Lunch at Paradise Room
Around 12:30 I entered the Paradise Room for lunch. Unlike previous years, members had to buy their lunchtime drinks as no vouchers had been given; I bought myself a Pepsi. Next, I went to get my meal, which was still included in the trip price. From the available selection, I chose a hot dog sausage and a beef burger. Chips and fried onions were included. Buns and side salad were also available. During lunch, there were speeches from Nev and Andy Hygate (Deputy Director of Operations). Club merchandise was available, including the new-for-2019 white "Real Coasters are made of WOOD" T-shirts, so I bought myself one.

Afternoon Free Time
At 14:00 I returned to the Pleasure Beach eager to enjoy some more rides. The first thing I noticed, from ride entry signs, was that the rides were still due to close at 17:00. I passed the Ice Blast entrance, only to be told it was unable to operate due to the strong wind. My first after-lunch ride was Derby Racer; I had one go. Although the RCCGB wasn't going to have an afternoon ERS on Grand National again this year, I was determined to ride it anyway Saturday afternoon. I enjoyed two goes Grand National, left lift hill with Carl May, followed by right lift hill alone. Around 14:50, I went to T Café to enjoy a cup of coffee. Having finished my coffee, I had one go on the bobsled coaster Avalanche next; there was a long queue, but it was worth the wait. Thankfully, the inverted coaster Infusion was walk-on, so I enjoyed two goes on it. This turned out to be my final coaster ride of the day. Having left Infusion, I met Wendy Adams Evans and Barry Frost, so we had one go on Wallace & Gromit's Thrill-O-Matic together. After that, I returned to riding alone. I had one go on River Caves, this time with my glasses on, so I could see the scenes clearly. Finally, I had time to ride Ghost Train and Alice Ride once each before the Pleasure Beach closed at 17:00.

Altogether a fun day of riding. During the morning ERS, I enjoyed riding ICON for the first time ever, and hence adding it to my coaster count. It's a pity I missed Blue Flyer, which was also available during the ERS, but at least I rode it twice later in the morning. During the rest of the day, I enjoyed plenty more rides, including Revolution, Nickelodeon Streak, Big Dipper, Grand National (both lift hills) and Infusion. The only let-down was the weather; strong winds all day, which prevented Big One from operating, and drizzle or rain at times. Due to the inclement weather, the Pleasure Beach closed at 17:00, instead of 18:00 as planned, but I guessed that would happen when I saw the morning weather forecast. I was heartbroken at the 17:00 closing time, as that's the earliest I've ever seen Blackpool Pleasure Beach close on the Saturday of the Blackpool Bash weekend.

Coffee at Pizza Hut
My original plan was to leave the Pleasure Beach at the advertised closing time of 18:00, and go straight into the Paradise Room for a rehearsal. The earlier closing time left me with time to fill, so I went to Pizza Hut, Ocean Boulevard for an Americano, which I enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Having left Pizza Hut, I headed for the Casino Tower. Walking northwards along the sea front, into the strong wind, was quite difficult.

Day Two - Saturday 27 April 2019 (evening)
I entered the Casino Tower via a corridor, leading to a reception, where visitors sign in. I showed my Back Stage Pass and my RCCGB 2019 membership card, signed in, and went up the back staircase to the Paradise Room. This year's theme was Cartoons and Kids' TV. A Muppet Show style backdrop, with boxes and The Coaster Crazy Show logo (a variation of The Muppet Show logo) was already in place at the back of the stage. I chose my seat, set up my camcorder, put on my evening outfit and, when an opportunity arose, rehearsed my Gong Show act on stage. Around 19:15 the doors opened to members not taking part. Many wore something connected with cartoons and kids' TV, e.g. Bart Simpson, Mr. Men, Popeye, Scooby-Doo. Mark and Margo Lewis dressed as Andy Pandy and Looby Loo. Someone dressed as a Blue Peter Advent crown. I wore my RND 2019 Mickey Mouse T-shirt and a pair of red sports shorts. Food was on sale, so I bought myself curry and rice, plus half a Fosters to drink. A medley of cartoon theme tunes was played on the sound system until the start of the show.

The First Half
The Coaster Crazy Show began around 20:15 with the opening act, which made use of the Muppet Show style backdrop. The Muppet Show Theme began, and ten Muppets (controlled by the Sheppards) appeared in the boxes, just like in the opening sequence to The Muppet Show. When the opening act finished, Nev appeared, dressed in a Fred Flintstone outfit, to give his opening speech. Next, Emma Erangey sang the Spandau Ballet song "Gold". It was now time for the Kids' Gopher game. Although Nev asked ten children under 12 to approach the stage, only nine wanted to enter. When called, they ran into the audience to fetch the item specified by Nev, e.g. hotel key, mobile phone, only to find one less chair on their return, thereby forcing the child unable to find a seat out each time. Officially, the winner was the youngest participant, Freya. However, she remained in her seat from start to finish, and items were handed to her, which I feel was unfair. As far as I'm concerned, Alice, who was eliminated in the final round, was the real winner, out of the eight children who actually left the stage to look for the required item each time. The final act before the Gong Show was Ella & Mollie, under the stage name CJ, performing a well-choreographed dancing and gymnastics routine, accompanied by the song "On & On" - Cartoon (Feat. Daniel Levi). They made it look really easy, when it must be quite difficult to perform.

The Gong Show
It was now time for the famous Gong Show, which featured a record-breaking 11 acts this year. The first act was Linda Reynolds as a Lion Tamer, appropriately accompanied by the song "What's New Pussycat" - Tom Jones. She picked up a large cuddly lion, before falling and rolling over, as though she was fighting with it. After 45 seconds, the horn went. Next, Ryan Hackett entered the stage, wearing a Freddie Mercury mask, to perform a recreation of Freddie Mercury's performance of "Ay-oh" at Live Aid in 1985. Whether Ryan sang along or just did the actions is uncertain, but anyway, he reached the end without the horn blowing. The Rogers Girls, who have performed during previous years, were back this year to do an Irish dance, along to the song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". After just over three minutes of dancing, the horn finally went. Fourth in the line-up was first-timer Gary Oliver, to amuse the audience with his comedy. This quickly attracted much booing and the horn went. Fifth to perform was Chris Bell as Claude, the invisible man, Raynes. This was rather odd, because Claude (Chris) didn't actually appear. Anyway, the horn went. Next, Sam Bryant appeared, dressed as the Pokémon character Ash Ketchum, to sing the Pokémon Theme. Part way through, he was joined by someone dressed in a large inflatable Pikachu costume. When Sam reached the line "Every challenge along the way," the horn went. Act 7 was two girls, under the stage name A-M-A, performing a well-choreographed dancing and gymnastics routine to the song "Solo Dance" by Martin Jensen. The horn went after the girls left the stage in one direction. A-M-A could become a competitor to CJ in future years. Act 8 featured James Staggs pretending to play an inflatable saxophone, along to the instrumental bit of "Run Away" - SunStroke Project (Eurovision Song Contest 2010 entry from Moldova), followed by "I'm Too Sexy" - Right Said Fred. Part way through "I'm Too Sexy", this attracted much booing and the horn went. Next, Julia Carter, plus Debra and Grace Boggis, under the stage name "Carter & The Bogglets" tried juggling, accompanied by the tune "Mexican Hat Rock" (The Applejacks). It wasn't long before the horn went. The penultimate act was Keith Wakeling, under the stage name Sir Richard, singing "Knights in White Satin", whilst playing an acoustic guitar. Within one minute, this attracted booing, and about one and a half minutes after Keith entered the stage, the horn went. Finally, it was my turn to perform the actions to "Baby Shark". There was much cheering and applause when I reached the end of the song without the horn blowing.

Top two: James Staggs, Nemesis Nick; Winner: Nemesis Nick
Bottom two: Gary Oliver, Nemesis Nick; Ultimate worst: Nemesis Nick

Bizarrely, after being voted the best act, I was also the voted the worst act! Still, I've already been through that in the Gong Show before. Well done to all the others who took part in the Gong Show 2019. When I returned to the Paradise Room, the next act was already underway.

Rest of Coaster Crazy Show
Back to the billed acts next. Dan Ould, who won the Gong Show 2018, was back to perform a tribute to Tape Face. I missed most of Dan's act, as I went to buy my final drink of the night, half a pint of Heineken before returning to my seat. For the final game of the night, Nev asked six adults to approach the stage. The participants had to answer questions, but were not allowed to say "Yes" or "No", pause, hesitate, or give irrelevant answers. The top two, Chris and Mark, continued to the second part, Open the Box. Nine boxes contained one prize each. The top two prizes were a stay for two at the Big Blue Hotel, plus wristbands for the Pleasure Beach (value over £200), and a stay for a family of four at the Drayton Manor Hotel, including breakfast and evening meal, plus Park entry (value over £300). Booby prizes included a stick of Blackpool Rock, a RCCGB sticker and a 20th anniversary pen. Mark had first choice of box, he picked number 9. When Nev eventually offered £50 cash (after a series of smaller offers), Mark declined the box and took the £50. Just as well, because he turned down a stick of Blackpool Rock. Next, Chris chose box 3. When the cash alternative reached the £50 maximum, he took the box instead of the money. Luckily for him, that box contained the stay at the Big Blue Hotel. When the game ended, the stay for a family of four at the Drayton Manor Hotel still hadn't been won, so Nev auctioned it to raise money for charity. The bidding started at £100, and after a series of increasing offers, the prize was sold to someone who bid £400. The finale featured Wendy Adams Evans, dressed as Laa-Laa, singing "Yellow Submarine" once through, followed by "Bare Necessities" twice through. When Wendy finished singing, Nev gave his closing message, and thanked all who had performed and the staff.

After Show Party
Towards the end of Nev's closing speech, the stage went down to form the dance floor for the after-show disco, which lasted about an hour. Many including me danced along. To tie in with the Cartoons and Kids' TV theme, the party mix began with the 5-4-3-2-1 countdown from Thunderbirds, followed by part of the Sesame Street opening theme. This was followed by a series of pop song snippets from various decades. Towards the end the following four songs were played in full:

"Dancing Lasha Tumbai" - Verka Serduchka (Ryan and co appeared on stage just in front of the curtains doing the actions, and members on the dance floor copied them)
"(Is This The Way To) Amarillo" - Tony Christie
"Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" - Monty Python
"Theme from New York, New York" - Frank Sinatra

The Warner Brothers cartoon closing theme "That's all folks" marked the end of the disco. Finally, those who had dressed up assembled for a group photo. Afterwards members were asked to pack up and leave as quickly as possible. Around 23:25 I finally left the Paradise Room via the spiral stairs and was back at my hotel a few minutes later.

Day Three - Sunday 28 April 2019

First Thing
After an action-packed Saturday, I awoke at 06:45, feeling thirsty for more. I put on my "Warning not responsible if left unsupervised" T-shirt and Team Bath hoody. Once again, I had an early breakfast at 08:10, consisting of cereal, orange juice, beans on toast and a mug of coffee. After breakfast, I walked to the Pleasure Beach as quickly as possible. It was dry outside, and far less windy than Saturday morning, but it was a bit chilly. Everyone was waiting outside the Casino Tower. Shortly afterwards, the doors were opened and everyone went inside the tower to wait on the ground floor. At the main desk, I exchanged my Sunday Wristband Voucher for my wristband and Park Pass. Whilst in the tower, I removed my outer layers to have a few pictures of me wearing my "Warning not responsible if left unsupervised" T-shirt; several others who saw it liked it.

Morning ERS
When Nev was given the signal by the staff, the Club entered the Pleasure Beach through the gates. The day began with the ERS on Big One, Big Dipper and Grand National. Once in the Pleasure Beach, I began with Big Dipper; I had one go in the front row with Herman, and another go in the fifth row alone. Both times Big Dipper seemed less rough than it did when I rode it late morning on Saturday. I spent most of the rest of the ERS on Grand National, and had four goes, in the following sequence: left lift hill, right lift hill, left lift hill, right lift hill. This time I had two wins and two losses, a fair balance I suppose. Grand National didn't seem as rough Sunday morning as it did Saturday afternoon. Finally, I had time for one more go on Big Dipper, alone in the front row. Since I was the only Club member wanting to ride it, the rest of the train was filled with the general public. Nonetheless, this was technically the final run of the ERS, as this was the last train on which Blackpool Bash 2019 attendees could be admitted to Big Dipper without a wristband or tickets.

Summary of my rides during the Sunday morning ERS: Big Dipper 3, Grand National 4 (left lift hill 2, right lift hill 2). Did anyone beat me on that?

After ERS
The ERS finished around 10:45. No further Club activities were scheduled for Sunday. Members with Sunday wristbands stayed and continued riding. Those without Sunday wristbands left and went straight home or visited other Blackpool attractions. Since I had a Sunday wristband, and was staying in Blackpool Sunday night, I continued riding until closing time of 17:00. During the rest of the day I enjoyed plenty more rides, however I didn't re-ride Big Dipper or Grand National the rest of the day.

At this point I went to Champagne Coffee Lounge for a Grande Americano. I saw Ann Morgan and Lorraine there, they liked my "Warning not responsible if left unsupervised" T-shirt. Having left Champagne Coffee Lounge, I headed towards Nickelodeon Land. Along the way I met Peter O'Brien; I spoke to him briefly, and we had our picture taken together. When I reached Nickelodeon Land, I had two goes on Nickelodeon Streak, front row followed by near the back. Next, I enjoyed two goes on Blue Flyer. Thus, I had now ridden all four wooden coasters at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Funnily enough, I didn't ride any of the wooden coasters again later in the day. After that, I rode Avatar Airbender, as I missed it on Saturday. A fun ride, but once was enough; in fact, this was my final Nickelodeon Land ride for Sunday. Having left Nickelodeon Land, I headed for Big One; I particularly wanted to ride this as it was closed all day Saturday. Whilst queuing, I spotted Derek and Alan Eddy further ahead in the queue, but they had their turn, and exited the ride, well before I got on. Eventually, it was my turn; this mega fun ride was well worth the wait, and furthermore it was my first steel coaster ride of the day. Due to the long queue, I only had one go, and didn't return to it later. Next, I headed towards Revolution, which had just reopened, having had a problem. The sunshine, and much calmer wind, meant the ride experience forwards and backwards through the loop was much more pleasant than in in the strong wind on Saturday morning. This was my only go on Revolution all day. My final ride before lunch was Avalanche, I had one go in the back car of the train.

At this point I felt like a light snack, so I went to T Café for a cheese toasted sandwich meal deal, which included a packet of crisps and a drink (I chose coffee). Having finished my lunch, I met three other RCCGB members wearing Blackpool Bash 2019 badges, they were Karl Travis and his two children, so we had one go on Wallace & Gromit's Thrill-O-Matic together. This was my only known instance of riding with other Blackpool Bash 2019 attendees on Sunday after the morning ERS ended. Having left Wallace & Gromit's Thrill-O-Matic, I returned to going around the Park alone. I began with one go on River Caves. Next, I enjoyed Ice Blast and Flying Machines once each; I particularly wanted to ride those as I was unable to ride them on Saturday. After one go on Derby Racer, I walked to the south end of the Pleasure Beach, hoping to fit in a few rides there. When I approached Steeplechase, the green and yellow lanes were open, but the red lane was closed. I had one go on the green track. Due to my desire to ride ICON, and hopefully also Infusion, I resisted the temptation to queue for the yellow track of Steeplechase. Without further ado, I queued for ICON. After quite a lengthy wait, I enjoyed a fast and smooth ride around the track. Obviously, I only had time for one go. Having left ICON, I still wanted to fit in a go on Infusion, but was aware it might be closed by the time I got there. When I got as far as Avalanche, I abandoned my desire to ride Infusion and rounded off the day on Avalanche instead. After waiting a few runs to get on Avalanche, I sat in the third car of the last train of the day.

Altogether a coaster crazy final day of the RCCGB Blackpool Bash 2019, during which I enjoyed 7 rides during the ERS, and 16 more rides thereafter. Just like last year, Sunday felt slightly odd after the ERS ended, knowing there were no further organised group activities (e.g. lunch in a central location), and many members left after the ERS ended. After midday I often felt I was the only member left in the Pleasure Beach, until I occasionally spotted the odd one or two other Blackpool Bash attendees. At least Sunday's weather was a vast improvement on Saturday; dry all day, sunny at times and far less windy than Saturday. The better weather on Sunday meant that Big One, Ice Blast and Flying Machines were able to operate.

Sunday Evening
For the third year running, I stayed Sunday night in Blackpool. Having left Blackpool Pleasure Beach at 17:26, I returned to my hotel room and relaxed for about one and a half hours. Around 19:30 I went to The Velvet Coaster (Wetherspoon) for my evening meal. I took a while looking at the menu, but eventually I chose BBQ chicken pizza for main course. An alcoholic drink was included; I chose one pint of John Smiths. My pizza was tasty and delicious. As if that wasn't enough, I had a dessert as well: warm cookie dough sandwich with ice cream. Altogether a delicious two-course dinner on my final night in Blackpool. Best of all the turnaround time on food quick. Back in my hotel room, I relaxed the rest of the evening.

Monday 29 April 2019

Monday First Thing
For the third year running, I woke up in Blackpool on the Monday morning after the Blackpool Bash. Naturally I was determined to make the most of my extra day in Blackpool. Having put on my self-designed 47th birthday T-shirt, I began packing and had breakfast around 08:45. Just like Friday morning, I had cereal, orange juice, a full English breakfast, toast and a mug of coffee. I enjoyed it at a more relaxed pace, as I didn't feel in such a rush as the previous two mornings. After breakfast, I finished packing and vacated my room around 10:15.

Madame Tussauds
To fill up my final day, I visited Madame Tussauds Blackpool. After leaving the hotel, I caught a tram from South Pier to Central Pier and entered Madame Tussauds soon after 10:30. Once admitted I saw plenty of waxwork representations of TV celebrities, sports stars, pop stars and comedians over three floors. New for 2019 is the Doctor Who exhibition on the ground floor, occupying the rooms where Lifestyle TV and Crime Drama were until last year. This features a Police Box, with the current Doctor beside it. There are also costume displays, presumably from past series of Doctor Who. On the second floor, I took more time over the Sporting Hero Academy and Marvel exhibitions (which were new last year) than I did last year. Sporting Hero Academy focuses on the six sporting hero key indicators: agility, speed, poise, dedication, focus, stealth. This time I tried most of the games in this area, which test those. Much to my disappointment, the climbing wall was closed all day. The laser maze was open, but there appeared to be a problem with name entry, so I gave that a miss too. After the Sporting Hero Academy and Marvel exhibitions, I got to the recreation of the Rovers Return Inn on the second floor. As well as seeing figures of Coronation Street characters, I bought myself a pint of Boddingtons from the bar there. After that, one new addition to the Best of British exhibition, on the first floor, was six of the seven James Bond actors. Throughout the building, I photographed many of the sculptures and had my picture taken beside several of them. Altogether this was another worthwhile visit, because it's changed quite a bit since my 2018 visit, with the addition of the Doctor Who exhibition, and relocation of some statues, e.g. The Beatles, John Thaw, David Jason. I left Madame Tussauds just after 15:00

Monday Late Afternoon
Without further ado, I caught the 15:16 tram from Central Pier to South Pier, and returned to the hotel where I had stayed to collect my luggage. Having done so, I caught the 15:37 tram from South Pier to North Pier. Once there, I went to The Frying Squad Fish and Chips in Market Street. There I had fish, chips, curry sauce and a can of drink (I chose Sprite) as a meal deal, at one of their indoor tables. It felt odd to be eating a cooked meal at that time in the afternoon, but it was the only time that suited my travel plans. Having left The Frying Squad, I walked straight to Blackpool North station. Just across the road from the station, I still had time to enjoy a large coffee at Subway, Talbot Gateway.

Journey Home
Having left Subway, I walked across to Blackpool North station, where I caught the 17:11 train to Manchester Piccadilly. Whilst at Manchester Piccadilly, I had just enough time to buy myself a takeaway raspberry and almond bake, plus an Americano, from Costa Coffee, before catching the 19:05 train to Bristol Temple Meads. The final leg of my journey was the 22:23 train to Bath Spa. I finally arrived Bath Spa at 22:34, and soon after that, I was home.

Summing Up
Another mega excellent weekend away at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in Granadaland, my twelfth Blackpool Bash to-date. It was great adding ICON to my coaster count, and riding Grand National, Big Dipper, the Big One and other rides again. At the Blackpool Bash, the ERSs and other riding are only part of the fun. The other major chunk of the fun includes the Friday evening entertainment, Saturday lunch and Saturday evening Coaster Crazy Show and disco. It was great to be in the Gong Show for the tenth time to-date, this time performing "Baby Shark". For me, it was an unexpected shock being voted the best and worst act, but I've had that honour once before. No wonder Nev says in the Blackpool Bash invite "If you can only make one Club trip this year, make it this one". Many thanks to Andy Hine for all the effort involved in organising a trip of this nature, including Friday evening entertainment, all of Saturday's events in the Paradise Room, and the ERSs Saturday and Sunday morning. Thanks also to the three entertainers Martin Scott-Price, Wendy Adams Evans and Mick Miller Friday evening, to the ride staff required for operating the applicable rides during the Saturday and Sunday morning ERSs, to the caterers for providing food Friday evening, Saturday lunchtime and Saturday evening, to the sound technicians Friday and Saturday evening, and to all members who performed billed or Gong Show acts Saturday evening. The only let-down was the weather on Saturday; strong winds all day, and drizzle / rain at times. At least Sunday was dry all day, sunny at times and far less windy than Saturday.

RCCGB Blackpool Bash 2019 can be likened to a three-course meal as follows:
Starter: Friday Fun (Friday evening entertainment)
Main course: Saturday daytime and evening activities
Dessert: Sunday morning ERS and free time thereafter
