Eurovision Song Contest 2017 Analysis

Here are all the 26 finalists, in the order they will perform tomorrow night:
Israel, Poland, Belarus, Austria, Armenia, The Netherlands, Moldova, Hungary, Italy, Denmark, Portugal, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Australia, Greece, Spain, Norway, United Kingdom, Cyprus, Romania, Germany, Ukraine, Belgium, Sweden, Bulgaria, France.

Now for the 16 countries which failed to reach the final, but will still vote tomorrow night:
OUT: Albania, Czech Republic, Estonia, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Finland, Georgia, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Montenegro, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Switzerland.

N.B. Any use of "Tuesday" throughout this post means Tuesday 9 May 2017. Any use of "Thursday" or "last night" means Thursday 11 May 2017. Any use of "tomorrow" means Saturday 13 May 2017.

Now let's look at some country groups:

Baltic States (Ex USSR)
OUT: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.

How unusual to see all three Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) fail to qualify. Normally at least one of them reaches the final. I am gutted and shocked that Estonia didn't qualify because their entry "Verona" is the one song I most wanted to qualify from the second semi-final last night. It's a very catchy song, which one could easily sing along to, and I thought Koit and Laura sang it really well last night. In fact, if the UK had been voting last night, I would have voted for it. At the other extreme, thank goodness Latvia and Lithuania are both out as I detested their entries and thus they ended up on my "Definitely don't want to qualify" list whilst watching the first and second semi-finals respectively. Of course these countries still have to vote tomorrow night, so they won't be able to exchange their high jury or televoting points with each other. Since Finland is also out they won't be able to vote for Finland either. Most likely they'll give high jury and televoting points to the other ex-USSR countries that are in the final.

Benelux
IN: Belgium, The Netherlands. (Luxembourg didn't enter yet again).

Well done to both Belgium and The Netherlands getting to the final this year, considering that for seven out of the eight years from 2005 to 2012 inclusive neither of them qualified. I'm a bit two-minded about their presence in this year's final though. Although I particularly liked the online preview video of Belgium's "City Lights", and the said track on the CD album, I was disappointed with Blanche's live performance in the first semi-final Tuesday evening, and therefore ended up putting Belgium on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list that evening. When the first nine qualifiers had been announced, given that two of my unwanted countries (Armenia and Moldova) had been announced, I would rather the last place had gone to Finland or Slovenia instead of Belgium. Anyway now that Belgium is in the final, I hope Blanche sings better in the final tomorrow night than she did Tuesday evening. As for The Netherlands, I felt borderline about OG3NE's "Lights and Shadows" in the second semi-final, and therefore their entry ended up on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list last night. I don't mind The Netherlands having qualified even though it wasn't one the ten I most wanted in the final (it was better to have had The Netherlands in the final instead of Lithuania or San Marino). However when the first eight qualifiers had been announced last night, two of them being Romania and Norway which I didn't want, I would rather the ninth qualifier had been Estonia or Ireland instead of The Netherlands. Anyway good luck to Belgium and The Netherlands in the final; they will still be able to award each other 12 jury points and 12 televoting points tomorrow night.

Nordic area
IN: Denmark, Norway, Sweden. OUT: Finland, Iceland.

I am gutted and deeply upset that Finland failed to qualify as I thought their entry "Blackbird" was one of the best songs in the first semi-final, which is why it was one of the songs I voted for it Tuesday evening. On the other hand I'm appalled and disgusted Norway reached the final, because I thought "Grab The Moment" was one of the worst songs in the second semi-final, and hence on my "Definitely don't want to qualify" list last night. Thank goodness Iceland is out as I detested their song "Paper" in the first semi-final Tuesday evening; in fact the only word which really stood out "Paper" got on my nerves every time I heard it. I'm glad Denmark reached the final because their entry "Where I Am" was one of the songs I most wanted to qualify from the second semi-final last night. As for Sweden, I felt borderline about whether or not I wanted their entry "I Can't Go On" in the final, which is why it ended up on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list Tuesday evening, but its presence in the final is acceptable to me. Interestingly the three Nordic countries which qualified for the final (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) are the three which are commonly referred to as Scandinavia. So that means all three will be able to give each other high jury and televoting points tomorrow evening. In addition, Finland and Iceland which failed to qualify will still be able to give high jury and televoting points to Denmark, Norway and Sweden tomorrow evening.

Greece and Cyprus
IN: Cyprus, Greece.

I'm glad Greece and Cyprus both qualified for the final as both were among the songs I particularly liked, and thus ended up on my "Definitely want to qualify" list in the first semi-final Tuesday evening. So that means Greece and Cyprus will now be able to give each other 12 jury points and 12 televoting points tomorrow evening if they want to. That said, if 2015 is anything to go by, given that Italy's entry is a strong contender to win this year (just like in 2015), maybe Greece and Cyprus will both give their 12 jury points and 12 televoting points to Italy, but even if they do that they'll almost certainly give each other 8 or 10 in jury voting and televoting.

Former Yugoslavia
IN: Croatia. OUT: F.Y.R. Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia. (Bosnia & Herzegovina didn't enter this year).

This has been another unlucky year for the former Yugoslavia, with only one of the five ex-Yugoslav countries participating this year reaching the final. I am gutted and deeply upset that Slovenia failed to qualify as I thought their entry "On My Way" was one of the best songs in the first semi-final, which is why it was one of the songs I voted for it Tuesday evening. I'm also disappointed that Serbia didn't qualify, as their entry "In Too Deep" was a good song which was among the entries I most wanted to qualify from the second semi-final last night. However I'm glad Montenegro is out as I didn't think much of their entry "Space", and thus put it on my "Prefer not to qualify" list whilst watching the first semi-final Tuesday evening. As for F.Y.R. Macedonia, I felt borderline about their song "Dance Alone", and therefore put it on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list, whilst watching the second semi-final last night. So that means F.Y.R. Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia, plus Albania which is not part of the former Yugoslavia but also failed to qualify, will all be able to give their 12 jury points and 12 televoting points to Croatia tomorrow night, but who will Croatia give any of their points to now? Croatia won't be able give their points to the other ex-Yugoslav countries or Albania. Maybe Croatia might give their 12 jury points and 12 televoting points to Italy (their neighbours across the Adriatic Sea), especially as Italy is so strongly tipped to win this year.

Founding Seven
By this I mean the seven countries which appeared in the very first Eurovision Song Contest in Lugano in 1956:

IN: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands. OUT: Switzerland. (Luxembourg didn't enter yet again).

As I've already said, I didn't mind Belgium and The Netherlands getting to the final, but it's a pity their songs got there at the expense of other songs I had a greater desire to qualify to the final Tuesday and Thursday evening. As for Switzerland, I didn't think much of their entry "Apollo", and therefore it ended up on my "Prefer not to qualify" list in the second semi-final last night, so it's just as well Switzerland didn't get to the final. Of course, France, Germany and Italy automatically qualified for the final as Big Five members.

And Finally
Tomorrow evening's Grand Final certainly looks set to be a spectacular one, and I'm really looking forward to it. Most of the countries I wanted to qualify are in, but some of the countries I least wanted (Armenia, Moldova, Norway and Romania) have slipped through against my wishes. I still think Finland and Slovenia deserved the places Armenia and Moldova took on Tuesday evening, and that Estonia and Ireland deserved the places Romania and Norway took last night.

Eurovision Song Contest 2017 Second Semi-Final

Host country: Ukraine (NTU)
Venue: International Exhibition Centre, Kyiv
Hosts: Oleksandr Skichko, Volodymyr Ostapchuk and Timur Miroshnychenko
Green Room:
Date: Thursday 11 May 2017

N.B. Any use of "tonight" or "this evening" throughout this post means Thursday 11 May 2017. All times in this post are in BST.

The Opening
Shortly after the start, Oleksandr and Volodymir played some Eurovision hits Ukranian style; Oleksandr played a recorder and Volodymir played an accordion. Song excerpts which featured in this compilation included "Euphoria" by Loreen, "Fairytale" by Alexander Rybak, "My Number One" by Helena Paparizou, and "Rise like a Phoenix" by Conchita Wurst. They were accompanied onstage by dancers and singers.

The Songs
Nine minutes after the start of the show (20:09 BST) it was time for the first song. Each song was introduced by a postcard film related to the appropriate country.

Song 1: Serbia - Tijana Bogicevic "In Too Deep"
It's difficult performing first, and judging the first song in either semi-final, but "In Too Deep" was one of my preferred entries among the preview videos for the second semi-final. I like tonight's live performance just as much. It's a good power ballad to start the show, and very well sung. What was the significance of the man lunging and rolling over sideways though? This song definitely deserves to be in the final, see you Saturday Tijana.

Song 2: Austria - Nathan Trent "Running On Air"
Another of the second semi-final contenders I liked when watching the preview videos. "Running On Air" may lack the winning edge of "Rise Like A Phoenix" in 2014, but it's still a good song with a catchy chorus, and well performed live tonight. What was the significance of the crescent moon on stage though? I'd like this to qualify for the final.

Song 3: F.Y.R. Macedonia - Jana Burceska "Dance Alone"
I felt borderline about this song when I first saw its preview video, and when hearing it on the official CD album. Tonight's live performance is certainly better, it's quite a catchy song but I'm still borderline as to whether or not this ought to be in the final.

Song 4: Malta - Claudia Faniello "Breathlessly"
Another song I was in two minds about when watching its preview video and hearing it on the CD album, but I like it much better sung live tonight. It's a ballad with gently paced verses and a catchy chorus, and very well sung. This definitely deserves to be in the final, I hope to see you there Claudia.

Song 5: Romania - Ilinca ft. Alex Florea "Yodel It!"
After Romania's unexpected absence last year, they are back this year. This time they've gone for a song which features a lot of yodelling. I didn't think much of this song from the first time I saw its preview video, or when hearing it on the official CD. Quite frankly I dislike its live performance tonight just as much, it's a rather silly song really, and I want it to stay out of the final. Unfortunately I have a feeling "Yodel It!" will get through just because it's catchy and makes one want to yodel along to.

Song 6: The Netherlands - OG3NE "Lights and Shadows"
I wasn't overly keen on this when watching its preview video, or hearing it on the CD album. To me it seems an unusual style of singing which is not to my taste. Looking positively I like it considerably more sung tonight, the three ladies performed it very well, with good harmony. An entry I feel borderline about whether it should qualify or not.

A short break followed at this point.

Song 7: Hungary - Joci Pápai "Origo"
When I first saw an online video of Hungary's choice of entry didn't like "Origo"; at time it seemed a very unusual style of singing and the rap made a bad song worse. On my subsequent viewings of its official preview video, and hearing it on the official CD album, I continued disliking it. Sung live tonight I still don't like it. I'd rather this doesn't qualify.

Song 8: Denmark - Anja "Where I Am"
I watched the Danish national final online earlier in this year and at the time thought "Where I Am" was a good choice. Since then I've quite liked it whenever I've watched its online preview video, and I enjoyed tonight's live performance just as much. It's a good, catchy song, and very well sung live. I hope this goes through to the final.

Song 9: Ireland - Brendan Murray "Dying to Try"
Although Ireland has had seven wins in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest, it hasn't had much luck in recent years. "Dying to Try" was one of the 2017 entries I particularly liked from the first time I saw its preview video, and when listening to the official CD. Tonight Brendan gave a great performance of an excellent song tonight. I like the way it's a rather quiet song for the first two thirds, and then there's a really powerful chorus. What was the significance of the balloon on stage. This definitely deserves to qualify to the final.

Song 10: San Marino - Valentina Monetta and Jimmie Wilson "Spirit of the Night"
The smallest country by land area taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, San Marino. They've only reached the final once since their debut in 2008. "Spirit of the Night" was one of my least-liked 2017 contenders among the preview videos and on the CD, and I dislike it sung live tonight. The preview video must have been shot in a night club, with loads of other dancers. That's where the EBU's limit of six performers really kicks in here; that effect is missing with just Valentina and Jimmie singing plus three backing singers on stage. I hope this stays out of the final.

Song 11: Croatia - Jacques Houdek "My Friend"
Another song I had mixed views about when I first saw the preview video, I thought this song seemed very unusual, it's all kinds of everything and it seemed questionable whether or not it would work at Eurovision. "My Friend" has grown on me with repeat viewings of the preview video, and hearing it on the official CD. I liked tonight's live performance, it was very well performed. What was the significance of the sunflowers and rainbow at the end? I'd like to see this in the final.

Song 12: Norway - JOWST "Grab The Moment"
Now for one of my least-liked 2017 entries among the preview videos and on the CD, and I dislike it sung live tonight. The chorus is memorable, but overall I think the song is somewhat below par. Please stay out of Saturday's final.

Song 13: Switzerland - Timebelle "Apollo"
I wasn't overly keen on Switzerland's entry whilst watching the preview videos, or listening to the CD. To me it's better sung live tonight, but I'm still not overly keen on it. What was the significance of the lady singing at the top of the steps for a significant part of the song? I'd rather this doesn't go through.

A short break followed at this point.

Song 14: Belarus - Naviband "Story of My Life"
Belarus is performing its song in Belarussian this year. I wasn't all that keen on this song when watching the preview video or listening to the CD album, but I quite like it sung live tonight. I like the way he man is playing the guitar whilst singing. What's the significance of the fans though? Based on tonight's live performance alone, it's a very catchy song, and well sung; I think this deserves a place in the final.

Song 15: Bulgaria - Kristian Kostov "Beautiful Mess"
One of my most-liked ballads among the preview videos and on the CD, I like tonight's live performance just as much. It's an excellent ballad and very well sung. What was the significance of the shaky visuals at times? This definitely deserves a place in the final.

Song 16: Lithuania - Fusedmarc "Rain Of Revolution"
Now for one of my least-liked songs among the preview videos and on the official CD album, and I dislike tonight's live performance just as much. I notice there's a lot of red in this song, the lead singer is wearing red and there is red in the background. Altogether, a poor choice of song from Lithuania this year. Please, please, please stay out of Saturday's final Fusedmarc.

Song 17: Estonia - Koit Toome & Laura "Verona"
One of my favourite 2017 entries from the moment I first saw its preview video and this is the song I've been looking forward to most of all tonight. This evening I've enjoyed "Verona" sung live just as much as in the preview video and on the CD. It's a very catchy song, which one could easily sing along to. Altogether Koit and Laura gave the first class performance I wanted of this excellent song. This is the song I want to qualify most of all, and possibly even win outright; I'll be gutted if it doesn't get to the final.

Song 18: Israel - IMRI "I Feel Alive"
The last song already, it's amazing how time flies. This is another song I particularly liked when watching the preview videos and on the CD, and I like tonight's live performance tonight. Another catchy song, and very well sung tonight, accompanied by vertical arm movements at one point. This is another song I'd like to see in the final

Televoting and Recap
After the songs finished, (names) reappeared to announce the start of the voting at 21:28 BST. A recap of the songs followed. The UK was unable to vote in tonight's semi-final, and therefore UK viewers saw a message "UK viewers cannot vote tonight" at the bottom of the screen during the recap.

My Preferences
Here are my preferences based solely on all of tonight's performances:
Definitely want to qualify: Serbia, Austria, Malta, Denmark, Ireland, Croatia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Israel.
Wouldn't mind qualifying: F.Y.R. Macedonia, The Netherlands,
Prefer not to qualify: Hungary, Switzerland
Definitely don't want to qualify: Romania, San Marino, Norway, Lithuania.

So these are the ones I want to see Saturday night: Serbia, Austria, Malta, Denmark, Ireland, Croatia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Israel.

Had the UK been voting in this semi-final, I would have voted for Ireland, Bulgaria, Estonia and Israel.

Eurovision Song Contest 2017 Second Semi-Final Results
Here are the results, which were announced in a random order at 22:04 BST. Any use of "tonight" still means Thursday 11 May 2017.

My desired qualifiers: Serbia, Austria, Malta, Denmark, Ireland, Croatia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Israel.

Actual qualifiers (in order of announcement): Bulgaria, Belarus, Croatia, Hungary, Denmark, Israel, Romania, Norway, The Netherlands, Austria.

Bold entries represent the actual qualifiers that match my preferences.

OUT: Serbia, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Malta, Ireland, San Marino, Switzerland, Lithuania, Estonia.

I am gutted and shocked that Estonia didn't qualify because that's the one song I most wanted to qualify tonight. Also I'm gutted that Ireland didn't qualify, because I really liked their entry this year and I felt it was one of tonight's entries most deserving of a place in the final. I'm also disappointed that Serbia and Malta didn't qualify, as both had quality entries which were well sung tonight.

I'm appalled and disgusted Romania and Norway reached the final, as they were on the list of countries I least wanted in the final. Romania's song was, in my opinion, a rather silly entry, predominantly yodelling, but my guess is that's the sort of novelty gimmick people wanted in the final. Still this is a song contest and it's a shame Romania's entry qualified at the expense of other better entries. As for Norway, I didn't think that was much of a song either and I really didn't want it to qualify. As far as I'm concerned Estonia and Ireland deserved the places Romania and Norway took.

I'm annoyed Hungary qualified as I didn't like their song much either (the rap made a bad song worse), there were other better songs more worthy of a place in the final than "Origo". Serbia or Malta, which were far superior in my opinion, deserved the place Hungary took.

Thank goodness San Marino and Lithuania failed to qualify, as both of them had what I felt were appalling songs not worthy of being in the final.

I'm so glad Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark and Israel all made it to the final as they were among the entries I liked most tonight and therefore put on my "Definitely want to qualify" list.

As for The Netherlands, their entry ended up on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list. I sort of liked it tonight, I'd say it was my most liked of my borderline entries so I don't mind that having qualified even though it wasn't one the ten I most wanted in the final. Put it this way, it was better to have had The Netherlands in the final instead of Lithuania or San Marino.

So six of my ten "Definitely want to qualify" countries (Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Israel) made it through and one of two "Wouldn't mind qualifying" countries (The Netherlands) also reached the final. Not bad I suppose.

Well done to the ten countries which qualified to the final. So that means all 26 finalists are now confirmed and 16 countries have been eliminated (but will still vote in the final). Roll on the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 Grand Final at 20:00 BST Saturday evening.

Eurovision Song Contest 2017 First Semi-Final

Host country: Ukraine (NTU)
Venue: International Exhibition Centre, Kyiv
Hosts: Oleksandr Skichko, Volodymyr Ostapchuk and Timur Miroshnychenko
Green Room:
Date: Tuesday 9 May 2017

N.B. Any use of "tonight" or "this evening" throughout this post means Tuesday 9 May 2017. All times in this post are in BST.

The Opening
The first semi-final began with the Monatik singing a song "Spinning". As he sang, a group danced around the stage. Towards the end most dancers left the stage leaving only one remaining dancer. Once Monatik finished, the three hosts Oleksandr Skichko, Volodymyr Ostapchuk and Timur Miroshnychenko appeared on stage.

The Songs
Eight minutes after the start of the show (20:08 BST) it was time for the first song. Each song was introduced by a postcard film related to the appropriate country.

Song 1: Sweden - Robin Bengtsson "I Can't Go On"
It's always tough being the first song in the first semi-final. Anyway when I first saw the official preview video, I was disappointed with Sweden's song choice this year compared to "Heroes" two years ago. I've noticed Robin began back stage tonight, just like in the preview video. Also he performed on a treadmill, along with others on stage tonight, just like the preview video. Did the treadmills actually have any significance to the song though? Robin gave a good live performance tonight, but I'm currently in two minds about whether or not this deserves a place in the Grand Final.

Song 2: Georgia - Tamara Gachechiladze "Keep The Faith"
I wasn't overly keen on this when watching the online preview video, or when listening to this on the official CD album, and in all honesty I still don't think much of Tamara's live performance tonight. I notice Tamara is dressed in red for some reason, and there's a lot of red in the background. What was the significance of red? Were the strobes really necessary? What was the significance of the flame effects. Please stay out of Saturday's final Georgia!

Song 3: Australia - Isaiah "Don't Come Easy"
Australia, which was originally a one-off guest participant in 2015 was invited back in 2016, and again in 2017. Just like last year, Australia has gone for a ballad this year. Based on tonight's live performance, it's certainly quite a good song, and very well sung, but I don't think it's as good as Australia's 2016 entry. Were the flashing effects really necessary? Nonetheless I think this is the best entry so far, and it ought to qualify to the final.

Song 4: Albania - Lindita "World"
Excuse me Lindita this is the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 First Semi-Final, not a wedding, so why were you dressed as a bride at the start of the song? I judged this as not bad when watching the preview videos. I definitely like it more based on tonight's live performance than in the preview video, but I'm currently borderline about whether or not this should be in the final.

Song 5: Belgium - Blanche "City Lights"
This was one of my favourite songs among the preview videos before Easter, and when listening to the CD album. In fact based on that experience I favoured this winning Eurovision Song Contest 2017 outright! Sadly I'm not so impressed on Blanche's live performance tonight. Quite frankly I didn't think her voice was strong enough, and she looked and sounded a bit nervous to me. I'm now borderline about whether or not this ought to qualify.

Song 6: Montenegro - Slavko Kalezic "Space"
Montenegro have put a variety of song styles in the Eurovision Song Contest since their debut in 2007, and this year they've gone for a lively song. Quite frankly I wasn't all that keen on this song when I first saw the online preview video, and I still don't think much of the song based on tonight's live performance. I like the way Slavko holds his arm in the air at one point, is that an attempt to mimic Måns Zelmerlöw from two years ago? What was the significance of Slavko lying on the stage for part of the song? I'd rather this doesn't qualify to Saturday's Grand Final.

A short break followed at this point.

Song 7: Finland - Norma John "Blackbird"
I watched UMK 2017 online from the UK the last Saturday in January, so I saw "Blackbird" and Finland's other 9 national finalists that night. "Blackbird" is one of the songs I particularly wanted to win that night, I'm glad "Blackbird" made it to the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. I liked this on the CD album, and I think Norma John gave a first class live performance tonight. Definitely the best song so far tonight. Based on tonight's live performance alone, Finland definitely deserves a place in Saturday's Grand Final. See you Saturday Norma John!

Song 8: Azerbaijan - Dihaj "Skeletons"
Firstly what is the significance of the step ladder and chalkboard (and messages on it)? This power ballad is another song I felt lukewarm about when watching the preview videos. I like the way they pulled down the sides of the chalkboard to form part of the floor, but was there any significance to that? Dihaj gave a good live performance tonight, but I'm borderline about whether or not this deserves a place in the final.

Song 9: Portugal - Salvador Sobral "Amar Pelos Dois"
When I first watched the preview song I thought it sounded a bit old fashioned. Based on tonight's live performance, it was a simple song, with no dancing around, graphical effects strobe lighting etc. That coupled with it being sung in Portuguese it really stands out from the crowd. A good song, very well sung live, I think this deserves a place in the final.

Song 10: Greece - Demy "This is Love"
I quite liked this song in the preview video and on the CD album, and I like it even more based on tonight's live performance. It's quite a lively song, and very well sung. Does anyone know the significance of the singer standing on the rising platform? Altogether a much better song than Greece's entry last year. This definitely deserves a place in the final.

Song 11: Poland - Kasia Mos "Flashlight"
This was one of my favourite songs among the preview videos and on the CD album. To me it sounds very much like a James Bond movie theme. I like the way Kasia is accompanied by the violinist in the background. What was the significance of the word FREEDOM on the background screen close to the end? Altogether a powerful song, very well sung live. This definitely deserves a place in the Grand Final.

Song 12: Moldova - Sunstroke Project "Hey Mamma"
I didn't like this song when I first saw the online preview video or on the CD album, and I dislike tonight's live performance just as much. I'm not sure the bursts of saxophone belong in the song, if anything I think they make a below par song worse. What's the significance of the women with the bouquets? Please, please, please stay out of Saturday's Grand Final.

Song 13: Iceland - Svala "Paper"
Another of my much disliked 2017 entries among the online preview videos and on the CD album, and I still don't like tonight's live performance. Were the green lasers towards the end really necessary? I don't want this in the final either.

A short break followed at this point.

Song 14: Czech Republic - Martina Bárta "My Turn"
Whilst watching this song's online preview video and listening to this song on the CD album, I wasn't overly impressed by it. Put it this way, I didn't think it was as good as Czech Republic's "I Stand" last year. Based on tonight's live performance alone, I think it's quite a nice song, and definitely one of the better songs that has been on tonight. I'd like this to appear in Saturday's Grand Final. Czech it out, see you Saturday Martina!

Song 15: Cyprus - Hovig "Gravity"
A song I thought was reasonably OK in its online preview video and on the CD album, I like it better sung live tonight. It's quite a good song overall, with a really powerful catchy chorus What was the significance of the lines on stage, and the lead singer lunging, during various times in the song? Another song I'd like to see on Saturday night.

Song 16: Armenia - Artsvik "Fly With Me"
I didn't think much of this song when I first saw the online preview video, and I don't think much of it sung live tonight. It certainly gets lively towards the end, with the flame effects, coloured lights, and arm movements, but I'd rather this didn't qualify.

Song 17: Slovenia - Omar Naber "On My Way"
This was one of my favourite songs when I first saw the original online preview video well before Easter, and at the time it reminded me of the UK's "One Step Out of Time" sung by Michael Ball in 1992. I was less keen on the revamped version in the final online video that was released later, based on Omar's live performance tonight, I think this is one of the best songs in tonight's Eurovision Song Contest 2017 First Semi-Final. It's a simple but powerful song with a catchy chorus, and very well sung. I like the way Omar holds his arm in the air at the end, is that copying Måns Zelmerlöw from two years ago? This definitely deserves to be in the Grand Final. See you Saturday Omar!

Song 18: Latvia - Triana Park "Line"
The final song already, it's amazing how time flies. I didn't like this song very much when watching its online preview video or listening to it on the CD album and I dislike it just as much tonight. Thank goodness it's not the Eurovision Dress Contest because I don't think much of Triana's outfit. What was the significance of the multi-coloured flashing images on the background screens at certain points in the song. Please, please, please stay out of Saturday's final.

Televoting and Recap
After the songs finished, (names) reappeared to announce the start of the voting at 21:32 BST. A recap of the songs followed. The UK voted in tonight's semi-final, and therefore UK viewers saw the voting numbers at the bottom of the screen during the recap.

My Preferences
Here are my preferences based solely on all of tonight's performances:
Definitely want to qualify: Australia, Finland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Slovenia
Wouldn't mind qualifying: Sweden, Belgium, Azerbaijan,
Prefer not to qualify: Albania, Montenegro, Armenia
Definitely don't want to qualify: Georgia, Moldova, Iceland, Latvia.

So these are the ones I want to see Saturday night: Australia, Finland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Slovenia, plus two (and no more) of Sweden, Belgium, Azerbaijan.

The UK voted this evening; I voted for Australia, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovenia.

Eurovision Song Contest 2017 First Semi-Final Results
Here are the results, which were announced in a random order at 22:04 BST. Any use of "tonight" still means Tuesday 9 May 2017.

My desired qualifiers: Australia, Finland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Slovenia, plus two (and no more) of Sweden, Belgium, Azerbaijan.

Actual qualifiers (in order of announcement): Moldova, Azerbaijan, Greece, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Armenia, Australia, Cyprus, Belgium.

Bold entries represent the actual qualifiers that match my preferences.

OUT: Georgia, Albania, Montenegro, Finland, Iceland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Latvia.

I am gutted and deeply upset that Finland and Slovenia failed to qualify as I thought they were two of the best songs tonight, and most deserving of places in the final. To a lesser degree I'm also disappointed that Czech Republic didn't qualify, I thought their entry was quite good and deserved a place in the final. On the other hand, I'm appalled and disgusted Moldova qualified as I detested their entry, and therefore it ended up on my "Definitely don't want to qualify" list. I'm also annoyed that Armenia went through, as I didn't like their song, and thus it went on my "Prefer not to qualify" list, but from the first time I saw the online preview video I guessed "Fly With Me" would qualify against my wishes. As far as I'm concerned, Finland and Slovenia deserved the places Armenia and Moldova took.

Thank goodness Georgia, Iceland and Latvia are all out as I detested their entries and thus they ended up on my "Definitely don't want to qualify" list. I'm also glad Montenegro are out as I didn't think much of their entry, and thus put it on my "Prefer not to qualify" list.

I was overjoyed when Poland was announced as one of the qualifiers, because I thought "Flashlight" was one of the best songs tonight, and hence on my "Definitely want to qualify" list. So much so Poland was one of the five countries I voted for this evening. Also I'm glad Australia, Portugal, Greece and Cyprus qualified for the final as they were four songs I particularly liked tonight, and hence they were also on my "Definitely want to qualify" list.

As for Belgium, I particularly liked the online preview video of "City Lights", and the said track on the CD album, but I was disappointed with Blanche's live performance tonight Although Belgium ended up on my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" list when the songs had all been sung, when it was time for the last qualifier to be announced, I would rather the last place had gone to Finland or Slovenia instead of Belgium.

So five of my eight "Definitely want to qualify" countries made it through and all three of my "Wouldn't mind qualifying" countries also reached the final. Not bad I suppose.

Well done to the ten countries which qualified to the final. So that means 16 finalists are now confirmed and 8 countries have been eliminated. Another 18 countries will battle it out for the 10 remaining places on Thursday evening.

Introduction
The Club's annual UK mega-trip to start the new coaster season. Once again the Blackpool Bash was a great success, with three professional entertainers performing Friday evening, a day of riding Saturday daytime (including the morning ERS), a Carry On films themed fancy dress party with songs, games, the Gong Show and a disco Saturday evening, and another ERS Sunday morning. A great turnout too with over 300 members from all over the UK (my list above is just a handful of them). I was determined as ever to attend the Blackpool Bash, and to take part in the Gong Show Saturday evening.

Thursday 20 April 2017

Getting to Blackpool
I travelled to Blackpool by train Thursday 20 April. My journey from Bath Spa to Blackpool North began on the 11:29 train from Bath Spa to Newport (Gwent), followed by onward trains to Manchester Piccadilly and Blackpool North. Having finally reached Blackpool North at 18:05, I tried catching a bus from a nearby stop to somewhere near Withnell Road, but ended up catching a tram from North Pier to South Pier. After reaching South Pier, my hotel was a short walk away.

Thursday Evening
Having checked into my hotel I went to The Velvet Coaster (Wetherspoon) for an evening meal. I had a Curry Club meal: large Chicken Jalfrezi for main course, a pint of Fosters to drink and, for a supplementary fee, vanilla cheesecake for dessert. Having finished my meal I returned to my hotel and relaxed in my room the rest of the evening.

Day One - Friday 21 April 2017

Daytime
For me Friday began with a delicious breakfast: cereal, a glass of orange juice, a full English breakfast, toast and coffee. I spent the day at Sandcastle Water Park, and was in the pool / slides area from approximately 11:20 until closing time of 17:00. A separate report about my day there is available here. After leaving I returned to my hotel room to relax for about an hour, and get changed for the evening.

Early Evening
Around 18:50 I went to Pablo's Fish and Chips for a Pablo's Special (fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter, plus fizzy drink). Mark and Margo Lewis were already there, so I sat with them whilst enjoying my Pablo's Special. Having finished my Pablo's Special I went straight to the Paradise Room.

Friday Fun
The Blackpool Bash officially began when the Paradise Room doors opened around 19:30. I entered the Paradise Room around 19:45, found myself a seat and bought myself a half a pint of Heineken. The fun began when Andy Hine appeared at 20:18 and said his annual catchphrase "Everybody say Blackpool".

The first official act was Bob Wooding. He did mostly magic, including a trick with five cards, the illusion of cutting a RCCGB member's hand in half and sticking a long pin through a balloon without it bursting. He also inflated a balloon, asked an audience member to specify an animal and shaped the balloon into that animal.

Next Ashley Webber, sang some songs, including Elvis Presley ''All Shook Up", Neil Diamond "Sweet Caroline" and Louis Armstrong "What a wonderful world". He asked the audience to join in at certain parts of the songs e.g. making sounds or singing a whole line. Once Ashley finished, the interval followed, during which someone bought me half an orange juice and lemonade.

After the interval Rick Sheehan provided the final act of the evening, which went on for just over an hour. He began with a few vintage TV adverts. After the 1970s Thames ident jingle he performed an awards show. The rest of the evening he did impressions of Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley, David Dickinson, Jim Royle, Alan Carr, Liam Galagher, Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, Freddie Mercury and Amy Whinehouse. His final impression was Mrs Brown, during which he intermingled into the audience immediately in front of the stage. When Rick finished there was still time to finish our drinks, but we had to be out by 23:00. I spoke to, and had my picture taken with some other members before heading back to my hotel for the night.

On the whole, an excellent selection of entertainment to start the RCCGB Blackpool Bash 2017. Many members liked my self-designed black "RCCGB Fun Night" T-shirt (with fluorescent pink lettering), my fluorescent pink sports shorts and my fluorescent pink football socks.

Day Two - Saturday 22 April 2017 (daytime)

First Thing
I awoke at 6:30, put on my red RCCGB T-shirt and had an early breakfast at 8:00 so I could be at the Paradise Room before 9:00. After breakfast I took everything I needed for the evening to the Paradise Room, and placed it back stage. Shortly afterwards I queued to be issued with my ride wristband, Park Pass and drinks voucher. In addition the whole Club gathered in front of the stage for a group photo. When the signal was given the Club entered the Pleasure Beach through the gate. It was dry and sunny at the time.

Morning ERS
The day began with a one-hour ERS on The Big One, Revolution and Blue Flyer. I began the day by having two goes on the Big One, second row followed by fifth row (next to Dan Ould). A fun ride to start the day, the only drawback was feeling the cold wind going up the lift hill, down the first drop and over the subsequent undulations at high speed. Afterwards I just had time for one go on Revolution before the ERS ended.

Summary of my rides during the Saturday morning ERS: The Big One 2, Revolution 1. Did anyone beat me on that?

Morning Free Time
After the morning ERS ended, members spread themselves around the Pleasure Beach and took over the rides. I began with Steeplechase. Since all three lanes were running, I rode the red, green and yellow lanes once each. On the way around the track I noticed the area which has been excavated for the new coaster Icon which opens next year. Next I had one go on the Gallopers, on the horse called Nick. I spent the rest of the morning in Nickelodeon Land, where I rode the wooden coasters Blue Flyer twice, followed by Nickelodeon Streak once (in the back row). Thereafter I rode Krusty Krab Order Up, SpongeBob's Splash Bash and Dora's World Voyage once each.

Lunch at Paradise Room
Around 12:40 I went to the Paradise Room for lunch. Once there I exchanged my drinks voucher for a Pepsi at the bar. Next I went to get my meal. Members could choose two of the following: beefburger, hot dog sausage, chicken burger; I chose beefburger and chicken burger, and they were served with chips. Buns were available to put the chosen items in and side salad was also available. During lunch there were speeches from Nev and a member of Pleasure Beach staff. Finally three birthday cakes to commemorate Nev's 50th birthday were unveiled, but they weren't cut at this stage. Club merchandise was available, including the red, purple and black RCCGB T-shirts which first appeared at the Blackpool Bash 2016; I bought myself a purple one.

Afternoon Free Time
Although the RCCGB wasn't going to have an afternoon ERS on Grand National for the third year running, I was nonetheless determined to ride it anyway. I rode Grand National twice; left lift hill followed by right lift hill. Next I rode River Caves and Wallace & Gromit's Thrill-O-Matic once each. By now I felt like a cup of coffee, so I went to T Café (which was nearest to me) to get myself one.

Having finished my coffee I enjoyed riding Big Dipper twice: fourth row followed by front row. Sitting in the front row gave me the advantage of an unobstructed view of the track all the way around. Next I had two goes on Infusion, second row followed by back row. Having left Infusion I met Peter O'Brien outside Wallace & Gromit's Thrill-O-Matic, and spoke to him for a few minutes. Afterwards I felt like another cup of coffee, so I went to T Café to get one. Next I rode Avalanche, Revolution and Diego's Rainforest Rescue once each. After that I was hoping to ride Wild Mouse, as that was the only wooden coaster I hadn't ridden so far Saturday. Unfortunately that was closed when I passed it; hence I ended up not riding Wild Mouse all day Saturday. My final ride of the day was one go on the tall drop tower Ice Blast.

Altogether a fun day of riding. The morning ERS went well, it's a pity I missed Blue Flyer in that time, but at least I rode it twice later in the morning. During the rest of the morning and after lunch I enjoyed plenty more coaster and non-coaster rides. Best of all it was dry and sunny all day.

Day Two - Saturday 22 April 2017 (evening)
Having left the Pleasure Beach around 18:15 I walked straight to the ground floor of the Casino Tower. I showed my Back Stage Pass, and was escorted up to the Paradise Room. I chose my seat, set up my camcorder, put on my evening outfit and rehearsed my Gong Show act. Around 19:30 the doors opened to members not taking part. This year's theme was Carry On (as in the films), and many dressed in something connected with Carry On films. I wore my navy pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers to be a patient from Carry on Doctor. Food was on sale, so I bought myself curry and rice, and also a drink.

The First Half
The Coaster Crazy Show began around 20:15 with Wendy Adams Evans singing a coaster themed variation of Love Shack, with Blackpool in place of Love Shack. She was accompanied by four others clapping their hands and swaying. When they finished Nev gave his opening speech, including some jokes. Next he asked audience members to wave their arms in the air along with the song "Hands Up", to recreate the Pleasure Beach fountains. Afterwards three ladies, under the name Carry On Girls, sang their own coaster-themed version of The Ballad of Barry and Freda, with "Let's Ride It" in place of "Let's Do It". The first game involved six adults who were attending their first Club trip. Each had to pick a number between 1 and 49 and remember it. Nev called out six numbers, and those whose number he mentioned had to sit down. The one remaining standee was asked what number he chose, and he replied "22". Nev told him to take the envelope off the back of his chair, open it, and the number pre-printed on the paper inside was 22. Amazing! Next Ella & Mollie, under the stage name CJ, performed a well-choreographed dance routine accompanied by the Martin Jensen song "Solo Dance".

It was now time for the Kids' Gopher game, in which ten children under 12 took part. When called, they ran into the audience to fetch the item specified by Nev, e.g. camera, hotel key, 12-sided £1 coin, only to find one less chair on their return, thereby forcing the child unable to find a seat out each time. During the round of eight children (when they were asked to fetch a hat) the child who was eliminated fell over and knocked his wobbly milk tooth out on return to the stage. Nev said this was the first time a tooth had come out on stage. On the final round the man one child brought on stage was wearing a dress (not a skirt as Nev asked for), so Nev declared both children joint winners. The final act before the Gong Show was June & David under the name Twokulele. June sang Caro Emerald's song "Liquid Lunch", whilst both of them played their ukulele.

The Gong Show
The Gong Show was originally planned to feature eight acts, however a ninth act not on the printed list back stage was added late. First to perform was David Harrington playing "Let It Be" by The Beatles on his electronic keyboard. He reached the end of the tune without the horn going, and much cheering and applause at the end. Next Death sang his coaster-themed variation of "Combine Harvester" (The Wurzels), with instances of "combine harvester" changed to "roller coaster". He reached the end of the song without the horn going, and cheering and applause at the end. Third to perform were first-timers, Gemma & Leila, performing medley of their favourite Disney songs. Their act featured 11 songs, including "Under The Sea", "Bare Necessities" and "A Whole New World"; they did various actions (some with props) along to each song. The horn finally went during their last song "Let It Go" from Frozen. Next Chris Bell sang "Pheasant Pluckers Son", but attracted plenty of booing, and part way through the song the horn went. The fifth act was Ethan Russell, who solved three Rubik's cubes, accompanied by the tune "Ride Of The Valkyries" (Richard Wagner), in 1 minute and 46 seconds. This attracted cheering and applause whilst he solved them and at the end. My performance of "Aga-Doo" was next. Although some of my actions during the chorus were different to those seen in the Black Lace "Aga-Doo" video (available on YouTube), you could say my actions were my interpretation. Just after the line "She showed me much more, not only to dance..." the horn went. Act 7 was Ryan, Matt, Rachel & Dan, under the name Carry On Drinking, dancing around the stage to the song "Alcohol Is Free" (which represented Greece in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest). After they made it to the end of the song, the audience clapped and cheered, but for some odd reason Nev gave a short horn blast. Next Martin Spruce read a poem which mentioned rides such as Nemesis and Megafobia. Despite lots of boos and "get off" requests from the audience, he read for quite some time, until eventually the horn went. The final act, Medieval Madness, was a late addition. This involved a male member as narrator, three ladies waving pink ribbons, someone wearing a dragon outfit, and two others wrapped in cooking foil. After plenty of booing and off calls the horn went. Between the third and fourth acts Nev admitted the quality is getting too high, and at the end he said the final act is the sort of cack we want next year.

Top two: Death, Ethan Russell; Winner: Ethan Russell
Bottom two: Medieval Madness, Carry On Drinking; Ultimate worst: Medieval Madness

Fair enough, I wasn't in the top two this year, but I wasn't in the bottom two either.

Rest of Coaster Crazy Show
Back to the billed acts. Dave Maryan sang "Don't Rain on My Parade" with no additional performers on stage, followed by "Human" (The Killers) with two children Alice and Harry (under the stage name CJ Junior) dancing around the stage. Once Dave had finished his act, Nev announced that because the show was behind schedule, the final game "Wood v Steel – The Race", billed to follow next, was dropped. Without further ado the finale followed. I had only just returned to my seat after buying myself another drink, so I had to leave my drink on my table and go back stage to appear in the finale. The finale featured Wendy Adams Evans singing "Do Wah Woody" (a coaster themed version of the Manfred Mann song "Do Wah Diddy"), accompanied by members who had taken part earlier including me, waving their arms in the air in time to the music. When the song finished, Nev gave his closing message and thanked all who had performed and the staff.

After Show Party
During Nev's closing speech the stage went down to form the dance floor for the after-show disco, which lasted about an hour. Many including me danced along. The mix of song snippets had changed a bit compared to recent years; as well as the usual "YMCA" (Village People), "Can-Can", "The Locomotion", there were several modern hits which haven't featured previously. Towards the end the following four songs were played in full:

Dancing Lasha Tumbai (Ryan and co appeared on stage just in front of the curtains doing the actions)
Amarillo
Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
New York

The Warner Brothers cartoon "That's all folks" marked the end of the disco. Finally those who had dressed up assembled for a group photo. Afterwards members were asked to pack up and leave as quickly as possible. Around 23:35 I finally left the Paradise Room via the spiral stairs and was back at my hotel a few minutes later.

Day Three - Sunday 23 April 2017

First Thing
I awoke at 6:50. Since it was St George's Day, I put on my navy St George's flag T-shirt and had breakfast at 8:20. After breakfast I went to the Casino Tower. At the main desk I exchanged my voucher for a wristband and gate pass. Whilst there I spoke to Mark and Margo Lewis.

WOW ERS
Around 9:45 the Club entered through the gates for the WOW ERS on Big Dipper, Wild Mouse and Grand National. Unfortunately only Big Dipper and Wild Mouse were open at the start, so I began with one go on Big Dipper. Having completed that go, I was hoping to have a second go on Big Dipper, but when I saw its increased queue length, I decided to approach Wild Mouse or Grand National instead. Since Grand National was still closed, I approached Wild Mouse next. However with due to the queue length, and only three cars in service, it took me longer than I expected or wanted to get on it. Hence I had just one go on Wild Mouse.

Grand National finally opened around 10:30. I rode it once up the left lift hill followed by once up the right lift hill. Suddenly the Club was informed the Grand National ERS was extended until noon, due to the later-than-expected opening of Grand National. Very soon afterwards, Club usage of Grand National thinned out considerably, leaving only a few members per train. I was mystified as to why that happened, because in the past Grand National has been well-used by Blackpool Bash attendees throughout the ERSs on it, but it meant the few who continued riding Grand National during the extra exclusive time were able to have lots of goes on it. I rode the left and right lift hills of Grand National in sequence three more times. Although the ERS was due to end at 12:00, by 11:50 I felt in need of a break from riding, so I left Grand National and went to the café near the fountains to get myself a much-needed coffee. I spoke to Nev and a few other RCCGB members there whilst drinking it.

After ERS
The ERS finished at 12:00. No further Club activities were scheduled for Sunday. Members with Sunday wristbands stayed and continued riding. Those without Sunday wristbands left and went straight home or visited other Blackpool attractions. Since I had a Sunday wristband I continued riding until the Pleasure Beach closed at 17:00.

Having finished my coffee I went to Nickelodeon Land, where I rode Nickelodeon Streak twice (back row followed by fifth row) and Blue Flyer twice. Thus I had now ridden all five wooden coasters at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Funnily enough, I didn't ride any of the wooden coasters again later in the day. Next I had one go on Krusty Krab Order Up, which ended up being my final Nickelodeon Land ride of the day. After that I enjoyed Revolution and The Big One once each. Whilst queuing for The Big One, I saw Barry Frost and Derek Eddy ahead of me, and they ended up on the same train as me, albeit a few rows in front of me.

At this point I felt like a light snack, so I went to T Café for a chicken salad baguette and lemonade. The rest of the afternoon I rode Wallace & Gromit's Thrill-O-Matic, Grand Prix, River Caves, Flying Machines, Ice Blast, Derby Racer and Avalanche once each. Finally I just had time to ride Infusion three times (back row, sixth row, seventh row) before the rides closed at 17:00. Without further ado I headed towards the exit. I don't recall seeing any RCCGB members whilst passing through the exit building, or just outside. Was I really the only RCCGB Blackpool Bash 2017 attendee to have stayed in the Pleasure Beach until closing time?

Altogether a coaster crazy final day of the RCCGB Blackpool Bash 2017. It's a pity Grand National opened later than expected during the morning ERS, and hence Big Dipper and Wild Mouse were rather busy as a result. Fortunately the Club had Grand National until midday to make up for it, but it's a pity so few wanted to ride it after 11:00. Although the few like me who did ride it beyond 11:00 managed to get lots of rides on it, the atmosphere and enjoyment one would normally expect from a Grand National ERS was lost with so few members on each train. I was surprised how few RCCGB members stayed in the Pleasure Beach after the ERS ended, but anyway the rest of the day I enjoyed many more coaster and non-coaster rides. Best of all it was dry and sunny all day.

Sunday Evening
For the first time ever, I stayed Sunday night in Blackpool. Having left Blackpool Pleasure Beach around 17:15, I returned to my hotel room and relaxed for a couple of hours. Around 19:15 I went out again. Initially I went for a brief walk around South Pier followed by part of the beach. After that I went to The Velvet Coaster (Wetherspoon) for my evening meal. I took a while deciding what to have, but eventually I chose BBQ Chicken Melt served with chips, peas, a mushroom and a tomato for main course. A drink was included in that meal; I chose one pint of Thatcher's Gold cider. As if that wasn't enough, I had Bramley apple crumble with custard for dessert. Altogether a delicious two-course meal on my last night in Blackpool. Having left The Velvet Coaster, I returned to my hotel room and relaxed the rest of the evening.

Monday 24 April 2017

Monday First Thing
This was my first time of waking up in Blackpool on the Monday morning after the Blackpool Bash since I first attended the RCCGB Blackpool Bash in 2008. Nonetheless, I was determined to make the most of my extra day in Blackpool. Having put on my "I'm Not An Adult I'm A Big Kid!" T-shirt I began packing and had breakfast around 8:40. My breakfast was the same as the previous three mornings. After breakfast I finished packing and vacated my room around 10:00.

Madame Tussauds
To fill up my final day, I visited Madame Tussauds Blackpool. After leaving the hotel I caught a tram from South Pier to Central Pier and entered Madame Tussauds around 10:30. Once admitted I saw plenty of waxwork representations of TV celebrities, sports stars, pop stars and comedians spread over three floors. About mid-way around I got to the recreation of the Rovers Return Inn on the second floor. As well as seeing figures of Coronation Street characters, I bought myself a pint of Boddington from the bar there. I photographed many of the sculptures and had my picture taken beside several of them.

Monday Late Afternoon
After leaving Madame Tussauds around 15:00, I caught a tram from Central Pier to South Pier, returned to the hotel where I stayed to collect my luggage, and caught another tram from South Pier to North Pier. When I got to North Pier around 15:45, I went to Frying Squad, where I had fish, chips, mushy peas and a drink (I chose coffee) as a meal deal. It felt odd to be eating a cooked meal at that time in the afternoon, but it was the only time that suited my travel plans.

Journey Home
Having left Frying Squad I walked straight to Blackpool North station. When I got there around 16:40, I went straight into the station, through the ticket barrier and waited in the ticket holders' part of the concourse until it was time to catch the 17:12 train to Manchester Piccadilly. Having reached Manchester Piccadilly I had time to buy myself a takeaway coffee before catching the 19:07 train to Bristol Temple Meads followed by the 22:23 train to Bath Spa. I finally reached Bath Spa at 22:37 and home about 15 minutes later.

Disappointingly low Club usage of Grand National during the extended exclusive time after 11:00 (but the few like me who continued riding it consequently had lots of rides).

Summing Up
Another mega excellent weekend away at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in Granadaland, my tenth Blackpool Bash to-date. It was great riding the Big One, Grand National, Big Dipper and other rides again, and catching up with other members. At the Blackpool Bash, the ERSs and other riding are only part of the fun. The other major chunk of the fun includes the Friday evening entertainment, Saturday lunch and Saturday evening Coaster Crazy Show and disco. It was great to be in the Gong Show for the eighth time to-date. Although I wasn't in the top two this time, at least I wasn't in the bottom two for once. No wonder Nev says in the Blackpool Bash invite "If you can only make one Club trip this year, make it this one". Many thanks to Andy Hine for all the effort involved in organising a trip of this nature, including Friday evening entertainment, all of Saturday's events in the Paradise Room, and the ERSs Saturday and Sunday morning. Thanks also to the three professional entertainers Bob Wooding, Ashley Webber and Rick Sheehan Friday evening, to the ride staff required for operating the applicable coasters for the Saturday and Sunday morning ERSs, to the caterers for providing food Friday evening, Saturday lunchtime and Saturday evening, to the sound technicians Friday and Saturday evening, and to all members who performed billed or Gong Show acts Saturday evening. An added bonus was the dry and sunny weather all day Saturday and Sunday.

RCCGB Blackpool Bash 2017 can be likened to a three-course meal as follows:
Starter: Friday Fun (Friday evening entertainment)
Main course: Saturday daytime and evening activities
Dessert: Sunday morning ERS and free time thereafter
